Love Sherrod Brown “And his lovely wife too” (the amazing Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, Connie Schultz). He would be an amazing choice for Senator again or President!

I hadn't thought of Sherrod for president, but really like the idea. He isn't fiery, but he has always been widely liked in his state because of his attitude, and what he has done for them. I think he would make a great president, and be a great antidote to all the chaos of the trump administration. He is very well grounded.

I like the guy, and wish him well in the Senate race because we can use all the effective help we can get, but we don't need another septuagenarian President. There are, or ought to be, enough Democrats in the next generation that we can find a good opponent for Juvenile Delinquent of whoever else the GOP decides to use a their front person.

It speaks to the insanity of Ohio voters that a great public servant like Sherrod Brown could have been booted out of office. It would be fitting if he won back a seat, reclaimed his old desk (that he wrote a book about because of its long history serving other great Senators) and helped the Democrats retake the Senate. Democrats, like Gov. Gavin Newsome of California, have got to make sure the Republicans can't steal the mid-terms. Because if that doesn't happen, Democrats will take back the House. And contrary to certain gloom-and-doom pundits, the Senate is in play. Trump has committed numerous impeachable offenses already. If the Dems retake the House, they can go for round 3 of impeachment with the crooked bastard, and a Senate majority, combined with some previously weak-kneed Republican senators emboldended by Trump's weakened state, might just get him out of office. There would be worldwide dancing in the streets if that happens. I'm not worried by that dolt Vance replacing Trump. The Democratic Congress could neuter the creep until 2028, when Democrats could reclaim the White House and start the difficult task of rebuilding our once-great country.

oh, and that divorce sometimes takes up a lot of newspaper space. it's moreno's daughter who is involved. she married a guy who was also in trump1. so they had a baby girl, and quite soon after that he (now rep. miller) went out of town on business. while he was gone, moreno's daughter took the baby and moved into a pricey home paid for by her daddy. ever since then it's been a battle. moreno's daughter likes to keep the baby away from miller as she fears for the child's safety. miller dated one of trump's press secretaries, and she alleged his was physically abusive. stay tuned because the saga isn't over. and the alleged abuser, miller, is in the u.s. house of representatives. i wish i didn't know so much about those people. i feel sorry for the baby.

Brown is probably the ideal candidate for the election. His instincts for protecting and advancing working-class people are longstanding and genuine. I wish him the best.

I figured that the Democrats' chances to re-take the House were pretty good, but that their chances to re-take the Senate were somewhat less than the chance that the sun will rise in the west tomorrow morning. Now I'm re-assessing. Between Janet Mills challenging Susan Collins, Roy Cooper running in NC, and now Brown in Ohio, Democrats at least have an outside chance to re-take the Senate now.

I have trouble with the idea that strong working class politics are "moderate" rather than "progressive". We seem to have an odd definition of progressive.

Expand full comment
little bird's avatar

Right. Because swinging to the ‘center’ has worked so well for Dems. The supposed ‘center' is BS perpetrated by that senile old arsehole who still thinks it’s the clinton (another rapist) glory days in the 1990s. (You know the one, starts with a ‘c’.) Ohioans were deeply committed to their unions and workers' rights for decades. Where the hell do you think weekends came from?? They were the ultimate progressives who repeatedly sent Dems to Congress throughout the 20th century (see, https://www.ohiosos.gov/elections/election-results-and-data/historical-election-comparisons/united-states-senators-from-ohio-1803---present/). Dems need to get back to the roots of what is best for workers, not Wall St. The ‘center’ is BS that stands for nothing and no one. It’s like brown carpeting — clueless people think it goes with everything but actually it just goes with nothing.

Far left progressive ideas will not help us win the Presidency in 2028. I hear them and many of them are correct. This time we need to focus in the qualities we need in a person to win back the presidency and get us back on track. We’ve got to win the big things in order to fix all the other things that are wrong.

Expand full comment
little bird's avatar

Oh, pulllleeeze. We tried that route over and over and over ad nauseam. Pressure from those ‘moderate’ idiots cost VP Harris the election. If she had been supported in remaining true to her real populist progressive ideas, she would have won.

Expand full comment
Nay's avatar

"focus on the qualities we need in a person to win"

She did not win for a variety of reasons. She had too little time to campaign, and she needed independents to turn out and vote for her. I also think she lost because 1. She is a woman and 2. She is a woman of color. This country just can't seem to find its way to electing a woman. Let's not forget that Biden should NOT have tried for a second term. If she had started earlier, she may have done it. I voted for her, I campaigned for her, I attended her rallies.

From a very pragmatic perspective, if it has to be another white male as long as he can chew gum and walk at the same time to win in 2028, he has my vote. I just want our country and the flag back again.

oh...I'm a woman.

Expand full comment
little bird's avatar

All true about how badly Harris was treated by that senile old joe and the ‘establishment’ Dems. Their self-satisfied self-absorption was disgusting to behold. (I hold a particular hatred of carville, another ancient senile jackass obsessed with past male glories.) And Harris certainly had an uphill battle because of her sex and color. But that would have been the case at any point when she might have tried to run so it’s not singularly pertinent to 2024; she knew full well what she was up against. But nothing you said addresses my main point, which is that if the Dem big wigs (mostly arrogant men) had just trusted her and gotten out of her way, she would have won. So, tell me what the ‘moderate’ Dems stand for because that is what people are asking and I don’t think even the ‘moderates' know. They certainly are glaringly unable to articulate it. Majorities of Americans are crystal clear on what they want: abortion rights and affordable housing and quality childcare and healthcare and good schools and healthy kids and safe neighborhoods and elder care and clean water and clean air and good jobs — these things are NOT radical. You name it and Harris supported it, as you well know if you did all the things you claim, which I applaud and have no reason to doubt. Again, I say that if the whiney ‘centrists’ or ‘moderates’ or whatever the hell they are calling themselves these days so they don’t actually have to take a stand on anything important had just gotten out of her way and committed to supporting her to the hilt, Harris would have won. Even with everything against her, she still almost did win. The time for middle-of-the-road is long past, if it ever really worked. I think ‘learning' that a woman of color cannot be elected president of America is the absolutely wrong lesson to take from 2024. The right lesson is that Dems need to stand for things that people want and they need to shout it from the rooftops in a thunderous voice. We need to think outside the box and find new ways that are not the same old, tired playbook. AOC and Bernie get it. Gavin Newsom gets it — why aren’t all the other Dems overjoyed by what he is doing and willing to jump to call? Dems have not gone for the whole ball of wax since FDR and it is way past time to work for exactly what we want and not settle for something 'less than’ before the campaigns even start. It used to make me furious when Obama would just give in to the despicable republicans in advance. And then they would lie and betray him anyway. I want it ALL for my kids and grandkids and I want it now. We should be past waiting any more. Now is the time to go for it all: we may never get another chance.

Save America. Crush republicans everywhere. Without mercy.

Most pundits and Democrats assume that the Republican senate majority is safe? Really? The pundits are helping promote that idea that the Democrats are out of touch with reality. Ironic, isn't it, when the Republicans are the ones who are in touch only with the fantasy that exists in Trump's feeble treasonous mind and Miller's malignant evil plans? After telling us on the Coffee hour that the Dems are waking up and fighting, why say now that we are assuming that the MAGA majority is safe? But as you also point out, Jen, we need to remind ourselves of FDR, JFK and LBJ and what their administrations did for average hard-working Americans. The younger generations need to be reminded that the Democratic programs described in the history books actually translate into rights, resources and protections that the MAGA Republicans are now brutally stripping away from all of us.

Sherrod Brown, with his approach to working people's needs is exactly what the Democratic Party used to, and still should be. His win would help to change the balance of the Senate into a body that favors the constituency of the country over Trump and corporate special interests. If for no other reason, we need a Democratic majority to improve the Supine Court in future appointments.

As much as I want to believe that four Semate seats are flippable, I worry. There are sure to be vulnerable seats currently occupied by Democrats, and they may be tough to defend. And though Susan Collins seems ripe for losing her seat, a lot will depend on the Democrat who runs against her making an effective case.

The one consolation I take is the fact that Fat Donnie himself is not on the ballot, which I hope means enough of his cult take a pass next November.
