Trump is like the bully in school who comes into a room of hard working students and flips over all the tables so he can feel powerful and show disdain. The tables in this case are health, environment, constitutional order, diversity, civil rights ..... and on and on.

Al Gore should have been our president. I’m so sorry he did t win. George W set us on a pathway to destruction. And we never have fully recovered . Al would still make an excellent president.

Expand full comment

What a different path we would have taken, if only. Al's a thoughtful, honorable patriot, but we need someone at least a couple of decades younger.

Do we know if Gore won? The Supreme Court stopped the recount. What a disaster: the Iraq war, the financial crisis, no effort to address the climate crisis. The world would be much better off if Gore had been President in 2001. Would we have gotten Trump if Bush hadn’t been such a disaster?

I actually dealt with that years ago in High School. I was one of the "brains" in high school who never got into trouble. I shared one class with the chief bully, and one day he decided to give me crap before class. I responded by shoving the desks out of the way and challenging him right there. He didn't expect that, and realizing that his record was worse than mine and knowing that I had studied karate he backed down. Word spread quickly and as a result he lost all his status. Two weeks later he dropped out. Bullies are invariably cowards.

I will be 70 in March, and I share all your fears. At times, it feels like we are re-entering some strange new Dark Age where willful ignorance, grotesque stupidity and unthinking cruelty are celebrated, rather than seen as obstacles to be overcome. Hatred for science and climate denialism is the curse of this new age. How we work to turn this terrible moment into something positive will be the challenge of my later years. I can only say take care of yourself, be as kind to yourself and others as you can. Seek new ways of doing as much good as you can, for as many as you can, for as long as you can. Happy Birthday!

I too will be 70 in March. Happy Anniversary of your Birth! Our country has become everything you describe and so much less.

I agree with your plan and will be looking for every way possible to turn this back around. I have friends who are tearful and so scared but, all this just gets my warrior blood boiling! We need to organize once again, resist and speak out against their morals and ethics not focusing on their politics but their values. May the Great Spirit and Mother Earth right the world.♡

I'll be 74 in June. I came of political age in the late '60s; I pinpoint 1968, the year I turned 17, as pivotal, both for me and for the country. I don't remember a time when this country was great, except in wealth and natural resources. I do remember a time when many were trying hard to make democracy work for everyone and I did my bit. I didn't realize till later that others were working as hard, and with vastly more financial resources, to return it to the decades and centuries of white male supremacy, a world where money talked louder than "we the people." It culminated in the election of 2024, but it's been building for a long, long time. We have work to do.

All you youngsters. I’ll be 78 in October and am still kicking. Let’s see this Trump aberration through!

Expand full comment

Motivation matters! IMO the aberration began with Reagan, and by my reckoning you have to be at least 60 to have somewhat adult memories of the U.S. before the neocons started working overtime to roll back gains made by people of color and women of all colors. Which is to say that those of us who do have such memories have an important role to play, because the neocons, originalists, and their dupes have been working hard to erase that history.

And congressional Repubs in on his plans for revenge are once again planning, at taxpayer expense, costly investigations/fishing expeditions against Trump's perceived enemies.

Vengeance is only momentarily satisfying - then it turns sour and poisonous. Congress GOP are mostly self- serving - they know Trump is old and declining fast. Michael Bloomberg should be acknowledged as a stand out figure for democracy. This from Heather Cox Richardson: And after Trump announced he would withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Agreement to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), billionaire former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg yesterday announced that his philanthropic foundation will cover the financial contribution the U.S. will not. According to Zack Budryk of The Hill, it will also provide the agreement’s reporting requirements for emissions associated with climate change.

“[P]hilanthropy’s role in driving local, state, and private sector action is more crucial than ever—and we’re committed to leading the way,” Bloomberg said.

While I despise trump and everything he stands for I’d like to mention he is not a smart person. The big money machine behind him and his agenda is The Heritage Foundation & The Federalist Society. They’ve been quietly building an army of right wing jurists, attorneys, politicians since the 1980’s. They own the Republican Party and have orchestrated gerrymandering across our nation. Theirs is a long game and the democrats have been asleep at the wheel. Now we’re behind the curve seriously and must have strong, aggressive strategists and leaders to counter attack the fascism that’s firmly in place. I’m ready to resist but we have to be absolutely together to develop a tactical, multidisciplinary response. Who will lead our resistance movement? I’m not sure but I hope to hell they emerge quickly.

Also Elizabeth Warren. https://www.warren.senate.gov/imo/media/doc/letter_to_doge_rerecommendationstosave2trillionoverthenext10years.pdf

I have a cause: use charitable deductions to save the SSA retirement Trust Fund. The default of Trust Funds is supposed to apex in 2033 due to the increase of birth rates of baby boomers. After 2033, birth rates of later generations flatten and the funds can be solvent.

Social Security is the greatest anti-poverty program in US history. Social Security protects workers, widow(er)s, orphans and disabled people and is a major investment for many of us. Donations can flatten the default curve, extending the apex.

Why doesn't SSA advertise that donations can flatten the curve and extend the default date beyond 2033?
