I certainly hope disenchantment sets in well before a constitutional crisis. Interesting program on tariffs and history. I had never thought of NATO funding vis a vis a strong Germany. Thanks for this interview.

Thank you for doing this Bill (we were neighbors in Austin for almost two decades) and Jennifer. This is exactly the sort of historical perspective that is needed in our news that is sorely missing. Without it, we're always reacting to the the present without sufficient context to craft good decisions and to plan most effectively.

NPR used to do a very good job of this, but it has moved away from it to a large degree. (I'm an old guy, having started listening back in the early 80s.) I'm delighted that The Contrarian is taking up the mantle of deeper reporting. I hope your influence keeps spreading more and more widely.

I hope Mr. Brands is right. I'm afraid America's leaders will be so beholding to the American oligarchs and although Trump may so away, someone like Trump will take his place. With the six Christian Nationalists on the Supreme Court, America is moving swiftly to an authoritarian theocracy. Like Putin's Russia, the rich will get richer, the middle class will become much smaller and the poor will become poorer.

This was a fascinating interview! We can learn so much from history and having such an interesting speaker apply it for us is so helpful.

Thank you, this interview was vey enlightening. I did not know that tariffs were the first form of state taxes to be eliminated when the Constitution permitted to collect income tax.

I appreciate H. W. Brands informing me historically and economically. What I am having trouble with is we keep forgetting to say things like: shipping that fabric or pair of jeans into the American consumer market increased global warming. Or how about the fact that Mexican farmers are being coerced into buying from despicable companies like Bayer and Monsanto who have created sterile seeds which because of the ecosystem will destroy heirloom seeds and we will all suffer from the loss of heirloom plants.

Wake up!
