Heather Cox Richardson - "The acknowledgement in the New York Times that billionaire Elon Musk frequently used drugs during the 2024 campaign was only one weak spot in the administration.
"Musk had fought with other administration officials, leading to rumors about the black eye he was sporting in Friday’s press conference. Recently, he had spoken out against the Republicans’ omnibus bill, and after reports that his Department of Government Efficiency had actually cost the government money, President Donald J. Trump reportedly asked his aides, “Was it all bullsh*t?”"
It probably was. What does GAO say?
It looks like Musk committed virtually every tort. Aside from DOGE, Trump removed 19 IGs who were investigating Musk Companies. WAPO 2/25 says Musk and his businesses have received at least $38 billion in government contracts, loans, subsidies and tax credits, often at critical moments.
According to CBS the bulk of Musk's 2024 spending to support Trump was through his own America PAC, to which he contributed $239 million. But filings also showed that Musk was also behind a political action committee using the late Ruth Bader Ginsburg's namesake — "RBG PAC" — in advertisements with misleading claims that Ginsburg held views on abortion that were similar to Trump's. WAPO said it was $288 million.
Yes, and if you read Brian Tyler Cohen’s column today, you’ll see that there was method to his madness. Between Jennifer’s column and Brian’s column we get a picture of the daunting task ahead. So much damage has been done and so many people are suffering and dying, it is hard to believe that this is the country I was raised in and that I love.
DOGE was NEVER about saving the government money by rooting out waste, fraud and abuse. It was ALWAYS about Elmo getting his hands on massive troves of verified government data, killing off any investigations into him or his companies, and raking in as many government contracts as possible. Hell, he even had Trump making Starlink contracts part of his demand in exchange for lowering tariffs.
Here is what Heather Cox Richardson wrote in Letters from an American on May 30, 2025:
"Today, Sheera Frenkel and Aaron Krolik of the New York Times reported that Musk put billionaire Peter Thiel’s Palantir data analysis firm into place across the government, where it launched its product Foundry to organize, analyze, and merge data. Thiel provided the money behind Vice President J.D. Vance’s political career. Wired and CNN had previously reported how the administration was using this merged data to target undocumented immigrants, and now employees are detailing their concerns with how the administration could use their newly merged information against Americans more generally."
The fact that Trump and his MAGA followers would gain this much power in light of their desperate lunacy is mind-boggling. But it points to the power of disinformation. As we enter this next technological revolution where artificial intelligence can have such a strong impact on how we think, and perceive the world, we would be wise to become very conscious of how bad actors Use technology and disinformation to affect our society. It is not only mind-boggling. It is bone chilling. Thank you so much for your good work!
I live in a deep red NC county, and even here, they are teaching elementary school children how to source check stories on the internet. It's remarkable and so sad that teaching how to differentiate fact from fiction has become a curriculum item! I was extremely surprised and happy to hear the head of our local school system talking about it. It's a new age.
I am a retired librarian. For many years librarians have been working with teachers and professors and students to teach about properly vet ting information and properly citing their sources. We need to be emphasizing these skills and their value. Thank you!
Let us hope that your Superintendent of Schools doesn't draw incoming MAGA fire, death threats, etc. They are thin-skinned just like El Taco and are dangerous when exposed to anything that runs counter to their strange beliefs.
It is mind boggling, but I believe one of the most bone-chilling events will be Trump's authoritarian-themed military birthday parade on June 14, and no one is talking about the significance of the day itself, other than that it is Flag Day and the 250th birthday of the Continental Army.
June 14, 1940 is the date that German forces entered Paris during WWII. Little more than a week later, defeated France signed an armistice with Germany.
From 2025 on, it will become known as the only date (hopefully) in United States history, when an American President (who ironically is a draft dodger), ever ordered a military parade glorifying himself. This type of parade is reserved for dictatorships, not democracies. The damage to our worldwide reputation cannot even be quantified.
When asked if the United States should have a military parade to "show off its might," President Dwight Eisenhower said, "Absolutely not. We are the preeminent power on Earth. For us to try and imitate what the Soviets are doing in Red Square would make us look weak."
Thank the goddess you are back calling the shits, Jen. As we have known since Day One, the Emperor and his entourage are as naked as jaybirds. “Nuts” doesn’t begin to describe this bowl of crazy.
There are already internet memes in Ukraine showing a smiling Zelenskyy sitting at his desk, with the Director of the SBU standing behind him holding up about 7 ginormous face cards, each with a black drone on them, substituting for the royal personages.
Comcast is selling off MSNBC. I have mixed emotions about their content. IMHO they should put Congressional Republicans on the hot seat.
Where I live, one of our MAGAT reps is the brother of talking MSNBC head Jose Diaz Balart. Votes with Trump virtually 100% despite the fact the we have a Dem county and his constituents include many Republicans adversely affected by that policy.
Here's an example.
Miami healthcare CEO Michael “Mike” B. Fernandez wrote the following open letter to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and members of the Republican Cuban-American Miami-Dade congressional delegation: U.S. Reps. Mario Diaz-Balart, Carlos Giménez and Maria Elvira Salazar.
"For decades, I have stood with you in defense of the freedoms we cherish, those we were denied in the country of our birth and found in the grace of this one. I know what it means to flee tyranny. Like you, I carry that history in my bones and that pain in my heart. But like a growing number in our community, I have watched with dismay as the very values we once found sanctuary in are now being attacked by a previously unthinkable threat — the sitting president of the United States."
Mario should be held to account. I knew his late older brother, Lincoln. He once was a member of Dade County Young Democrats but awitched over Cuba policy. Gimenez was our Dem County Mayor and switched to Trump in 2010.
I also did not bring up otherCNBC and Fox properties like WSJ.
I lived in Miami for 6Years back in the 90s, and agree. There is a lot of generational personality disorder in the Cuban Community - the first wave were basically Bautista supporters fleeing Castro and his depredations. As far as the MSM - we have proved that when the Megacorps own media outlets, the free press is the first victim.
DonOld, aka El Taco, probably doesn't know this classic country tune. He may talk a good game as a culture warrior, but clearly doesn't know crap about the real world of country music classics. Kenny Rogers rules!
Couldn’t have said it better myself. This needs to be said each and every day. If any CEO acted this way, they’d be replaced immediately. Why do we put up with this every day. 25th amendment folks
Thanks Jen! An anecdote: I wrote a letter to the NY Times (when I had a subscription, which I have since canceled) complaining about the sanewashiing and got the most irate holier-than-thou reply back from some junior staffer. It was so full of faux outrage that it was actually comical. It was at that point that I realized there is no purpose to expending energy to try to get the traditional media to abandon its new principle of "profit at all costs". I applaud the outlets that are still hanging on. But what we really need (especially after the stormtrooper-ICE fun and games of the weekend) is to actually start doing things that we in the pro-choice community have been doing for years at abortion clinics: surround people headed to immigration hearings with human shields; make sure that there are lawyers in the group; keep phones upraised to video every interaction; demand warrants and tell people to remain silent; demand official ID from anyone confronting ANYONE. I suspect that the people who are the new goon squad participants got their costumes from Amazon and have no legal standing. We are now really at war with the forces of evil and unless there are consequences for the bullies and the goons we will not succeed. That includes naming and shaming and not being nice about it. Including every member of Congress who is misbehaving, is hiring rent boys (and engaging in anti-LGBTQ+ hate speech), is engaging in insider trading (which is illegal). And I mean everyone. Because when Dems do this kind of crap, we are all tarred with the same brush.
Yes, but once again the question is how to go about a correction. We all know these people are insane, but there is (so far) not enough public pressure to effect change. And, should we manage to remove his insane lowness, the next several in the line of succession may actually be worse.
Worse in some ways, but JD Vance at least is widely disliked even by MAGA. So maybe there would not be quite the cult following as Trump has. It does boggle the mind doesn’t it? I’ve lived a long enough time to be in total disbelief over what I’m seeing.
Thank you for stating the absolute and obvious truth about legacy media and Trump, who becomes more unhinged with each passing day. I will share this post broadly today.
If there were even a handful of sane Republicans remaining in what used to be a genuine political party, NOW would be its last chance to speak up against the madness of the Trump "administration." Alas, there seems to be none. If responsible Republicans even exist they are practicing the "duck and cover" techniques that my generation of American school children were taught during the Cuban missile crisis of 1961. Why they have chosen the path of cowardice when the ability to halt this political madness rests in their hands is beyond me. It is shameful to the last degree and it will merit their political demise. There is no excuse -- none -- for the exercise of "restraint" and political "loyalty" when the future of our democratic and constitutional lives is at stake.
The Republican cowards are so insane-washed at this point they are mostly mute. Trump has made it crystal clear that he expects total loyalty to the Party (wink, wink) and himself (now one and the same). The GOPers, a/k/a Gophers, are terrified of loosing their livelihoods ($$$), popularity and most of all, their good names and reputations being smeared and ground to bits by Trump. He has them so frightened of
his wrath and retribution that they are cower under their desks. Trump knows this and has the Gophers right where he wants them.
Speaking about future of our democracy, Trump's authoritarian-themed military birthday celebration must be widely condemned. I just posted the following:

Agreed. But would you agree that we in the Democratic Party NEED a roster of electable people to replace those currently in power? We hear talk all the time about how ridiculous the Republicans are, but we need good and viable people to run against and replace them!
I don't doubt that it would take no time at all to gather competent people. Former Biden and Obama people are still around. Democrats don't recruit from TV Networks. My opinion.
This entire entry is so important, but today we read several paragraphs which are all too true: "In sum, pretending this crew is stable only puts our democracy and national security at greater risk. If ever there were more true statements, I haven't read them in recent days. Good job, Contrarians!!!
Telling like it is… the first step back toward sanity. Keep up the good work!
A valiant effort. It would be great if more people who need to see this could (and would).
Use your “share” button and spread the word. Maybe it will break through to some of those who are complacent about the situation. For far too many I’m afraid it’s a lost cause, but we must not give up!
You're right on all counts, and of course we must share. It's important.
Speaking of tellin' it like it is, check out this video from Dr. Annie Andrews, announcing her candidacy for Lindsay Graham's Senate seat.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J8wMNLaSNW4
Dr. Andrews pulls no punches, a concept that Chuck Schumer and most of the rest of the Dems would do well to pick up on.
I loved this - made me want to move just so I could vote for her!
Amen!
Exactly!! They are the very definition of kakistocracy.
Where is the balance sheet?

And Trump just announced a plan to produce a consolidated database on all Americans. Sounds perfectly benign, right?
What could possibly go wrong?
Quite like Hitler's use of IBM to find Jews in Nazi Germany.
I never knew he did.
Check it out.
It's likely all that data ended up in Palantir's hands for their new surveillance software.
. . .and in whose hands, pray tell, are those troves of verified government data, now? Musk's? Doesn't everyone want to know?
That's million dollar question.
Billion!
Musk: gotcher data. See ya layta.
😂🤣😂😅
treacherous heathen bastard.

oh my God......
Let’s start with the No. 1 source of fake news and disinformation: Fox News.
It boggles my mind that people are hooked on that crap.
There are three groups whose mental health needs questioning: Trump, his appointees and his supporters.
Indeed. They are the ones suffering from "TDS."
But they’re not suffering.
Tesla stock is off today 11% at opening.
That's just a paper loss unless the owner sells today. Unless they look at the stock price, they won't even notice.
The trend may not be his friend.
Yet.
not yet, when medicaid, snap, etc. is cut...they will be.
Thank the goddess you are back calling the shits, Jen. As we have known since Day One, the Emperor and his entourage are as naked as jaybirds. “Nuts” doesn’t begin to describe this bowl of crazy.
"Calling the shits..." 👍
It would be useful to actually name the "corporate" and "billionaire" run media so readers don't have to guess who you're talking about. WaPo?
WaPo, ABC, CBS, NYT, L.A. TIMES…
Fox. NBC.
Headlines today should be:
Trump to Zelinsky: "You don't have the cards."
Zelinsky. "You got to know when to hold 'em,
know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin' when the dealing's done
There are already internet memes in Ukraine showing a smiling Zelenskyy sitting at his desk, with the Director of the SBU standing behind him holding up about 7 ginormous face cards, each with a black drone on them, substituting for the royal personages.
My bad about Fox. NBC seems slightly less bad than the others...

Many of the Axios publications, esp. the ones by Mike Allen.

Vance is the creature of billionaire Peter Thiel.
And Curtis Yarvin. Thiel and Yarvin are proponents of a tech-bro dictatorship.
Thanks for adding his name. I was unfamiliar with his activities.
