Now there's a sincere, honest, responsible face.

Any chance we can appoint Atticus as Director of National Intelligence? He's obviously more well-qualified than the current nominee, and our allies would certainly trust him more with their secrets.

What a gorgeous puppy and what a heartwarming idea of honoring a pet of the week. How do subscribers nominate a pet of the week?

Very cute with intelligent eyes. Today I'm overwhelmed with MAGA fatigue, Trump evilness and the attempt to ruin our country. .. so the photo of a dog was greatly needed. Yesterday our rescue placed a 6 yo Airedale and on Sunday an 8 mos old Airedale mix boy heads to his forever home

Thank you for rescuing our favorite companion animals! I have rescue cats, and I hesitate to name dogs as the favorite, but cats are so much more subtle and don't have the broad appeal of a pooch. Love them both. You are doing great work!

Atticus is really cute. Who on the Contrarian does he belong to?

I'd always heard Golden Retrievers were clean and hated "fouling their own nest." Then we bought Happy (The Deerfields Call Me Happy). He was flown to Columbus, Ohio from Afton, NY and, poor guy, had diarrhea as the result. Well, I can tell you, Golden's, at least mine, don't like to foul their nest. The poor guy kept us up around the clock, with this sad look on his face as he quietly whined for my wife or I to take him out. Honestly, if a dog can look "guilty" for having to keep waking his owners, Hap did. He also became one heck of an alert, very capable obedience dog. Hap has been dead for about forty years now and I still miss him.

I should add this story: I took Hap to obedience school when I was newly in practice and just wasn't around enough to do the recommened two 20 minute daily training sessions. So, at class, with all the owners lined up with their dogs, Hap and I took a spot in the middle, standing slightly back so we wouldn't be noticed, and while the other owners put their dogs through their paces, Hap watched intently... and then performed really great when it was his turn. When people complimented me on how well I had trained him, I remember saying, "Well, it helps to have a smart dog." I truly was lucky to get two twenty minute training sessions a week with him.

I really do still miss him, forty years later.

What a great story and tribute to a loved friend. I am sorry for your loss, no matter the 40 years. We love who we love, and their absence is painful. Thank you for taking the time to tell us all about Hap.

I sometimes like to say to a friend, "Hap could write"... then say, "Well, he did everything else I ever told him to do, I just never told him to write..." 😎

I do still miss him. Thanks for your note.

What a great response! I too, had a dug that evinced shame/ embarrassment when he had an upset tummy and needed to go...now, but he was a Rottweiler mix (also gone some years back) who I still miss. My condolences even after 40 years.

You're amazing Atticus! Keep working on that potty training. Humans had to learn it too!

The Pet of the Week offers a nice way to calm my anxiety! So far our Golden Retriever, Rye, & black English Lab, Buck, have gotten me through this unsettling time in our country but they sure take up a lot of space in our bed! Atticus is very handsome.

It is interesting to me that so many human couples sleep with their dogs. I think having dogs in the bed demonstrates their importance to our well being.

What a good doggie!

Dogs have souls. You can see it in Atticus' eyes. Of course, you can see it in any dog. It shouldn't be surprising, as humans and dogs have been coevolving for at least several tens of thousands of years.
