Musk IS NOT drowning out the voices in Wisconsin. I've been knocking doors and my wife lets no casual shopper go without informing them of the risks to our rights if the Musk puppet wins on Tuesday. The mere mention of the name usually elicits an expression of disgust. We'll see how the upcoming winter storm affects tomorrow's events, but there is ample organizing occurring to make sure Musk does not get a "Wisconsin Nice" reception in Green Bay. If Judge Crawford wins, we may need to give part of the credit to Musk.

Trump has abused the Executive Order. It is time Congress restrict its use. As soon as the Democrats regain control they need to make this one of their first legislative actions.

We all know that the way to deal with a bully is to confront them. The question remains, why don't we do it? Columbia University, Paul & Weiss, variously un-named House and Senate legislators, and even the Senate Majority leader caved. Why? Have they no decency? Have they no moral compass? Have they no integrity? And when is enough enough? For heavens sake show some guts. Stand up for the people, the country, and for democracy.

There's a lot of projection there. Which party is banning books, keeping the AP out of the White House press room, allowing a private citizen and private enterprise (DOGE) to ransack the government, and allow a dementia-damaged felon from wrecking the country? Biden was small potatoes in comparison.

Expand full comment
Hal's avatar

There's no projection, Steve. There's truth, and there's right and wrong. Understand the difference.

Let's start with "small potatoes" Joe Biden. Now I actually don't care if there is a (D) or and (R) behind a name. But it is simply wrong for a family, WH staff, the VP, leadership of a political party and the media to deliberately hide the serious cognitive decline of a President over his entire term. They all knew. If you don't believe there was a problem then you either weren't paying attention or you just decided to give them all a pass because you're more loyal to a political ideology than the truth. The charade was exposed in the June debate. To make matters worse, the Dems thought it was okay to throw Biden to the curb and replace him with Harris, who knew all along how bad off Biden was. They all lied to the American public, and apparently you're okay with it. Shame on you for accepting a lie and a coverup.

"...banning books..."

Maybe it's more of a case where age-inappropriate books were removed as opposed to an outright "ban", which gets to the point of when those books were put in a library in the first place. Regardless, you're not being very specific.

"...keeping the AP out of the White House press room..."

Yeah, pretty childish on Trump's part. However, there's no "right" for the press to be briefed by the WH at all. It's a privilege, and the WH is the final arbiter of which outlets get to enter.

"...allowing a private citizen and private enterprise (DOGE) to ransack the government..."

"Ransack"? I agree it's a novel approach and the process certainly needs to be refined. But I have yet to see anyone in this forum take a look at what has been found and justify the spending. No one on the Contrarian staff has touched it. I'd like to think that wasteful spending would not be a partisan issue. Take, for example, this exchange on CNN:

"‘What Do You Say?’: CNN Host Challenges Ted Lieu On ‘Taxpayer Money’ Going To Questionable Programs Abroad"

https://www.msn.com/en-us/politics/government/what-do-you-say-cnn-host-challenges-ted-lieu-on-taxpayer-money-going-to-questionable-programs-abroad/ar-AA1zo7oO

Maybe you'd care to comment on the spending mentioned in the article.

"...allow a dementia-damaged felon..."

I think what really irks Democrats most is that more people decided to vote for the twice-impeached convicted felon over Kamala Harris, the walking word salad. She of Venn diagrams, yellow school busses and the "passage of time."

With the question of “Have You No Sense of Decency,” uttered 71 years ago to Joseph McCarthy, our country was very different than today. It was mostly a rural and small-town population with a strong religious commitment and trusted news organizations. There were three national networks and local print newspapers, usually with morning and evening editions and, when necessary, "Special Bulletins" for breaking news.

Today, we have 24/7 news cycles that allow us to get Left, Right, or Center and everything in between information instantly.

So, when we ask, “Have You No Sense of Decency,” Mr Trump? He has shown us that he's not capable of decency. He mocks the disabled, wounded, and dead soldiers. Calls anyone who disagrees with him a loser, wack job, or cheater. He cheats at golf; his caddies call him Pele, because he kicks his opponent's ball out of bounds. Cheated on all of his wives. He was convicted of cheating in his business. He refuses to pay his contractors, has been bankrupt six times, including a casino! Thinks his daughter Ivanka is "HOT!" and would "date" her if she weren't his daughter, which is just gross and incestuous.

So, no. Trump has no sense of decency. Never has and never will, and his MAGA followers don't give a rats ass what he does. Or until he takes away their Social Security, Farm Allowance, Senior Care Assistance for dear old mom and dad, and all the other government programs they've relied on for generations. Maybe then, they'll wake up and smell the coffee.

Having Immunity Doesn't Make it Legal

I greatly admire the law firms that have filed legal briefs in opposition to the extortionate conduct perpetrated by Trump against Paul Weiss, for whom I have little sympathy and much disdain.

I think that the court(s) before whom these briefs are filed by these courageous lawyers should be supplemented by a tidal wave of Friend of the Court (Amicus Curiae) briefs not only by lawyers and law firms around the country but by Attorneys General, universities and colleges and other impacted professions by Trump's extortionate and/or punitive measures in violation of many statutes and Constitutionally vested rights, including the Right to Counsel, Freedom of Speech, the right to due process and as victims of Trump's violation of 18 U.S. Code Section 1951 by engaging in extortionate conduct under color of right.

While Trump's cheerleaders on the U.S. Supreme Court may stretch to include Trump's felonious and illegal conduct under the vast swarth of immunity they have clothed him with, it does not mean that what he has done and continues to do is legal, only that he cannot be criminally prosecuted for it.

Those who carry out these illegal orders CAN be criminally prosecuted, and should be.

Expand full comment
L.D.Michaels's avatar

Aside from the issue of whether they can be prosecuted, there is a slight wrinkle as to who would or could prosecute those who execute Trump's illegal orders-Trump's DOJ? Nor do I see Trump's DOJ appointing a respected non-political and independent Special Prosecutor. I don't know the legal implications of whether there may be state jurisdiction but I would think that unless the acts were outrageously and patently illegal, a jury may be hard pressed to convict defendants who claim that they were acting pursuant to the President's orders.
