This is no different than an attack by a foreign power. This is a Pearl Harbor moment. We need our military and law enforcement to step in immediately.

Wow, knew it happened but didn't think it would be so much. Between this and Musk's millions thrown at disninformation, no wonder Dems didn't have a chance.

Expand full comment

Including the Jim Crow voting suppression laws, that enabled the bigots to toss over 4 million votes in the trash. Thom Hartmann breaks that done on Substack.

I somehow suspected there were "unreported" reasons for Trump's win. Having said that,

IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN CLOSE in a sane and

rational world...Trump should have lost in a landslide.

So the voting public bare the brunt of the resposibility---duped or not, and the many who chose NOT to vote.

Expand full comment

I totally agree. What did Musk do in Pennsylvania to the voting machines that Trump thanked him for?

Expand full comment

The reason it was close was because of the massive voter suppression. There's a good reason why so many did not vote!

Expand full comment

Sorry ChipsPOV, but voter suppression doesn't cover the MANY MILLIONS (36M) who didn't vote. My daughter has a friend in her late 20s, very smart, professional. When asked about voting by

my daughter (who, like her Dad, is a Progressive Liberal), the friend said "Oh, I just never got around to it"--which probably means she got mixed messages from her conservative parents and

didn't know which way to vote, so just decided not to.

36% of registered voters didn't vote in 2024. Shameful.

"IT SHOULD NEVER HAVE BEEN CLOSE in a sane and

rational world...Trump should have lost in a landslide."

Really? Based on what, other than your opinion?

"So the voting public bare the brunt of the resposibility---duped or not, and the many who chose NOT to vote."

That's the ticket - blame the electorate. Because as we all should know, VP Harris was so superior in knowledge and experience. She answered all the tough questions so thoroughly and convincingly...not. Her campaign blew through a ridiculous amount of money. She would not separate herself from Joe Biden's policies because she was part of it all. That alone should have made Harris a shoe-in for the Presidency, right?

David, get real.

Expand full comment

are you here just to troll, or do you have anything factual and useful to contribute?

Expand full comment

Hal, you are correct that the electorate is not to blame, mainly bc "duped" people are victims of, you know, the dupee!!

but Harris is also not to blame. MSM convinced you that she didn't answer Qs when in fact she did repeatedly. apparently T$%@# convinced you that his lies about Harris were true. also that his lies about Biden policies were true.

they weren't. you were duped. but i don't blame you. you probably have several kids and three part time jobs making it hard for you to process all the news and see through what's being done to your thinking.

WE HAVE TO STOP ATTACKING OUR OWN PEOPLE AND POINT TO WHERE THE BLAME ACTUALLY LIES.

Great comment Lisa. Given the certainly of severe repercussions, crisis, chaos and disasters ,some of them tragic following this nominations, I wonder if the democratic leaders and legislators have already in place a plan to prevent deflection of responsibility on the part of this administration and point straight at the responsible people, loud and clear, 24/7. Certainly they are going to try to blame on us. Wake up and be ready. Please!!!

Don’t blame the Republicans YET. We need them to stand up to this illegal, unconstitutional, and totally authoritarian power grab by a few money hungry leaders. I bet even MAGA voters don’t want their private information in government data bases to be used and abused by college students working for Musk. People who know nothing about government, have never been vetted, have no expertise in anything except but making money, and have not sworn the oath of government office - - to defend the Constitution and the people. So write to your Senators and House Representative, whether you have ever voted for them or not, and tell them “We Need You To Act on Behalf of All Citizens”!!

Our military and law enforcement are complicit

Expand full comment

I don't think so. But, they want us to think this. They are trying to make people believe that they are the majority and that they have a mandate to rule over us. Don't believe it!!

This is a classic good vs. evil. If the good don't win out, it will be the end of civilization. BUT, that's not going to happen. The Magats will fold if challenged. Most are cowardly losers who live in fear of the "others."

Absolutely right Priscilla

We need a solution for that big problem. If we have a message and nobody listen it's a waste of time, time we don't have.

Susan, as Asha said there are clusters of people within the FBI and most likely within the military that are complicit but I won't extend that shame to include everybody. By far most of them, I'm sure, are dedicated and decent patriots doing their job .

Expand full comment

Are they? That's a really broad condemnation and it seems to assume ALL military and ALL law enforcement have switched to trumpian authoritarianism. How do we know hoe broadly it's true, and is it possible that there's a majority that doesn't agree and might be thinking about their options to protect the laws and the country?

If every single one of them are complicit, then we are now a country of cowards.

It makes a difference if their phones ring off the hook. Of course they already know. And people can contact their Republican senators too, reminding them that if they collude with these horrible nominations, they’ll have to fight to get re-elected. It just takes a few votes. We must do what we can.

Yes, my House rep said keep those phone lines, emails, and letters coming - don't just sign on to a pro forma message but write your own and someone in their offices will pay attention and count it as serious.

I agree with both of you, Gary and Susan. Republicans have never quit, especially since Obama. They don't care of their cause doesn't stand a chance, or doesn't seem to. They just keep coming, like with trying to repeal Obama are 60 times, and nearly succeeding except for John McCain on that 60th try. Remember, few of us (including me) thought Trump had a chance in the first place. Including his own Republican opponents turned supporters. We need to take the same stance as a certain ballplayer (I'm a baseball man, myself, so won't bore non-fans with names here) who never quit, even if his team was down

12-0 in the ninth inning. We need the same attitude. They haven't won until they've won, and it's just one "game", or battle. It is NOT 12-0 in all of them; in some, we are winning. And we need to act like it.

Write them and call them until they cry uncle, and then write and call them some more.

We have a GOP majority in our state legislature. A 15 week abortion ban had a hearing in committee this week. Over 12,000 residents registered their opposition to the bill and just under 1,000 registered support. The sponsors of the bill requested the bill be withdrawn. Speaking out in opposition earlier this week contributed to Trump rescinding his federal funds pause. Our voices can make a difference sometimes.

Eve you are 💯 % correct but we can't just give it up. We have to buy time and in the meantime, organize and start defining a message that should be loud and clear.

Brigid, when the coming tragedy strikes because the institutions designed to prevent such events are being managed by vengeful morons we have to be ready to blame the real guilty people from senators to agencies directors and supporters in general. Our legislators and leaders should be ready for that certain moment.

Expand full comment

Agreed, but at what price to us, the American people? That's the part that is worrying.

Expand full comment

Rigid when you ,with legitimate concern ask,"at what price to us" I have to honestly say, the price is going to be extremely high. No way around. The way they are infiltrating the institutions and the speed and complicity of the republican senators in confirming the people whose only qualification is loyalty not to a country but to and individual tells you, the fight it's going to be hard and long.

Expand full comment

Nothing new. Republicans are enemies of America: only acting in the interest of Republicans, and NOT the country. As such, Republican Senators and Congressmen are in breach of their duty to protect their constituents, and support the Laws, Constitution, and betterment of this country. They are working for an adversary: the Republican Party. As such they are TRAITORS to America!

What can we do?

1) Fight them in Court

2) Expose them as TRAITORS!

3) VOTE them out at the first opportunity!

Expand full comment

You assume that the courts will have an opportunity to hear cases against Trump. You also assume that there will be another fair election.

I think it is a mistake to wait and see how this plays out. The time to action is now.

I agree with you on many counts, but we can't sit back and wait and see. Action is needed, and NOW, before they get in position everywhere.

It doesn’t help to put everybody in the same basket.

Unless you're willing to take up arms, it is my belief that this battle is going to be fought in the courts. To that end, give as much as you can to any entity that takes the federal government to court. If you don't have a favorite, take a look at Democracy Forward (https://democracyforward.org/). They are an umbrella organization that provides funds to a multitude of organizations fighting for us.

Expand full comment

Like it or not, we might actually have to take up arms, just like the French Resistance and the Jewish Resistance did during WWII.

Expand full comment

One issue I haven't seen addressed: what happens if the courts rule against Trump and he says, "who cares," and goes right on with his illegal policies. He has immunity. He can pardon anyone who follows his orders. Musk has the $$ to pay fines. Or they have the treasury pay the fines.

Expand full comment

I have seen this nightmare possibility discussed at The Bulwark. The Supreme Court has created a supreme mess.

I would argue that the Supreme Court knew what was coming when they gave immunity (subject to their approval) to the president. i.e. the Supreme Court has the ultimate power to decide if the president deserves immunity. That was fundamentally uncontsitutional.

not post a red flag warning without an action list. Realizing that perhaps an action list was given within the interviews, it would be most helpful to have them written as well for those of us who might not have time to listen to the interviews. In fact,, I would appreciate a transcript of all the interviews, as I am a reader rather than a watcher

Because the Republican Congress has laid down its responsibilities, it seems that unless we can get red state to start raising a ruckus to their Congress people, it is difficult to know where our powers lie.

SSA and Disability retirement is paid from the trust fund. Last year about $ 22 billion. Doesn't come from general revenue. SSI, on the other hand does. Incredibly even many members of Congress are ignorant and do not recognize that the trust funds are a separate entity.

I've been trying to send the following to the WH.

Use charitable deductions to save the SSA retirement Trust Fund.

The default of Trust Funds is supposed to apex in 2033 due to the increase of birth rates of baby boomers. After 2033, birth rates of later generations flatten and the funds can be solvent.

Social Security is the greatest anti-poverty program in US history. Social Security protects workers, widow(er)s, orphans and disabled people and is a major investment for many of us. Donations can flatten the default curve, extending the apex.

Why doesn't SSA advertise that donations can flatten the curve and extend the default date beyond 2033?
