Yesterday, the acting Manhattan US attorney, Danielle Sassoon, resigned after being directed by Emil Bove to drop the corruption charges against NYC mayor Eric Adams.
Danielle Sassoon should be applauded for standing on principle and the rule of law in the face of a completely corrupt political deal masquerading as a case dismissal. It should be noted that Sassoon is no 'left-wing lunatic' as The Felon will shortly be calling her on his Dollar Store social media site. She clerked for late Justice Antonin Scalia and is a member of Federalist Society. It's heartening to see people even from the right wing pushing back against this mafia-style administration.
Wow, that's really encouraging. I, too, have family members are solidly in the Trump cult. I hope someday they see the light, too, because unless they do we'll continue not to have a relationship.
Ok but what happens next? If all the principled prosecutors resign what are we left with? I'm not saying she should have executed the dismissal. I just want to understand why principled people quitting is a good thing? Because what happens next?
They would have fired her for not obeying their unlawful order if she had not gone ahead and resigned. If she stayed, she would have been asked to do more unethical acts. The same is true with the DOJ people who resigned over this unlawful order. Their actions draw attention to the rot at the heart of the Trump DOJ,
I understand your point. However, given how the DOJ is now trying to claim that the attorneys who resigned should be investigated for wrongdoing, it was important that they get out front and state their case. One of prosecutors who resigned actually received a letter saying he was fired for not obeying orders. He replied that he never received such an order from the acting Attorney General of NY but agreed with her decision. His scathing resignation letter got ahead of their perfidy. On PBS News Hour last night, they had a MAGA person who tried to cast the blatant disregard and violation of the law as two different legal opinions. (I wish that PBS News Hour did not feel under siege by the Trump FCC investigation.) MAGA and the Trump administration will always try to spin the story. Waiting until they do to get out in front of it is always a mistake.
I tend to agree, especially in the case of FBI Director, Christopher Ray. By quitting he has allowed Trump's unqualified nominee, Patel, to be directing the Bureau behind the scenes, before he is even confirmed by the cowardly Congress.
Good conversation, good points and clear explanations from Mimi Rocah and Jen Rubin. Danielle Sassoon and her fellow prosecutors who resigned did the courageous thing, and also the only thing for anyone who values their integrity. As horrifying as this is, it is less stressful to hear from people who channel righteous outrage than from the legacy journalists treating this as just another normal regular administration.
Oh, Cecelia - I so strongly agree with you! I am horrified, even deeply frightened, by the normalization of what is presently happening in our country as reported by legacy journalists. I can't listen to the legacy media! This source, Jen & Norm, tell it as it is. I am so grateful that the Contrarian exists.
Mimi Rocah is doing what she’s always done. Advocate and lead. In this come back that needs to happen to restore our democracy and our nation, Mimi’s voice needs to be in the forefront. But then again, I’m a biased, Westchester resident. 😊
Mr. Murray, I totally agree with you about Mimi and I'm not from Westchester. I live in the blood red state of Louisiana. Not all of us here have overdosed on the Kool Aid and are painfully aware of the ongoing coup d'etat and assault on democracy. Try living in a state where the governor is a MAGAt lapdog who emulates the orange-faced lunatic. Governor Landry is the head of the state regime that is pressuring your brave Governor Kathy Hochul to extradite NY Dr. Margaret Carpenter who is accused of mailing an abortion pill to a LA woman. Doing so would violate the NY shield law passed soon after the overturning of Roe. Gov Hochul basically told Landry to "take your extradition request and shove it up your ass." Makes a helluva lot of sense to me.
Does this information then make it reasonable for the American Bar Association to consider mobilizing disbarment efforts against Emil Bove and even Pam Bondi?
Help here please. Is Bove, in the DOJ, bound by the Bar as other lawyers are? Or are DOJ assistant directors exempt from the ethical, moral, and legal constraints that lawyers otherwise are? Is it not possible to refer Bove to the state bar for review? For the non-lawyers here, how does this work?
Good to hear about Sassoon. I fear she may be a unicorn. I am praying not, because there needs to be many such acts, and quickly. Where is our Congress?!
Congress, led by GOP, are nowhere to be found. Insurrectionist Mike Johnson has given his power to Trump because he knows GOP Congressional members would never vote for Trump's/DOGE's unlawful actions. GOP Congressional constituents would be up in arms. GOP Senators care only for power and will not cross Trump, which is why Trump's ILLT (Incompetent, Lawless, Loyal to Trump) appointees are all passing.
I would also say to the oligarchs and plutocrats and kleptocrats who are holding court with Trump: oligarchy is not a real political system but rather is only a means for the real fascist's ends: to take over all, including your wealth. Enjoy for a while; but check Putin's record because later you might want to stay away from high-rise hotel windows.
Unfortunately, even for Musk and the violent minions that attend to Trump's group, they cannot pay off and/or intimidate all the lawyers who can and probably will show up, with spines intact, though my guess is they'll keep trying.

I have a relative who is an absolute right wing nut, pro trumper. She has seen the light. If she can see the light, the light is getting pretty bright

I would let them fire me, go down standing your ground. The only sure way to lose, is to quit. Don’t make it easy.

I agree that Christoper Wray should not have resigned. Congress, or rather the spineless Republicans in the Senate, should have supported him.
Because if principled people don't leave, they'll spend their entire days documenting illegal request, after request, after request.
Then again, maybe that would be a good thing....
Exactly. The moron will now appoint for certain sycophants. You know the type: they'll say how high?

Outstanding interview. Thank you. But I’m still terrified.
Bove’s move is reminiscent of Trump’s in Helsinki.
Trump's move, through Bove, is the same as his 'perfect call' with Zelensky: "I'd like you to do me a favor, though."
If it’s all about “waste, fraud and abuse” why would Bove want to dismiss a case about bribery and corruption? Inquiring minds want to know.
Thank you for your courage and integrity. Something is very short supply these days.
I noticed a couple of rude comments here. Come on, Contrarian readers, we're better than that.
Excellent information Thank you

Personal integrity .....may it prevail.
