This was so interesting. Thank you. My grandmother from Eastern Europe was the last one of my family to arrive in the US in 1920 right before they slammed the door shut to Jewish immigration.I have to agree. In 2 years if we are able to vote again there will be so much damage that will have been done to us as a country and our institutions that they are tearing apart, trying to remove websites/archives and digital history, trying to take over culture which is also part of their Nazi playbook (Kennedy Center is just a start) defund PBS, NPR, no free press (WaPo just declined to print an anti-Elon Musk print ad) I don't know how we recover. But the other issue I am terrified of, that will be coming up to SCOTUS, is a test case on religion in public schools. That is our separation of church and state. For all its problems this country has had and its xenophobia and racism anti-Semitism I was born in a secular country. We are Jews and Muslims and Hindus and many other religions who do not believe in Jesus and who don't want to live in a right wing Christian theocracy. How do we stop that? Adam, as a historian knows that history has gone through these awful cycles, but this is unprecedented and he admits it.. These people have no intention of leaving office. If there are Dem wins they will scream rigged and stolen elections. The rhetoric is ratcheting up. We are in Nazi Germany now. Elon calling for a judges impeachment. Arrest someone if you don't like what they say. We are at an existential point in humanity. This is the 21st century with technology we never had before. Im getting nervous they will go through our emails and substacks and social media looking for dissenters. I honestly believe we won't make it another 2 years. I fear we are in danger of terrorist attacks from outside, I fear domestic terrorism from within.

PLEASE cover the SAVE Act. It will most likely be introduced int see House next week and could very well pass. It will have a chilling effect (to say the least) on voting.

It's very easy to get depressed and pessimistic. However, that gets us nowhere [except depressed :)] I've been around for over 70 years and can see that there are pendulum swings, especially in politics and culture. Hochschild's explanation about nativism and other trends does seem to indicate that perhaps we're going through another pendulum swing following the culture swing into a different direction that had taken place over the past 4-5 years. We have to stay vigilant, do what we can, and certainly hope for better times. In another post, someone wrote beautifully about Navalny. I read "Patriot" and it is a portrait of "never giving up". So, my friends, onwards and upwards.

Interesting to listen to and well delivered. I like how Jen Rubin asks her questions and elicits well explained answers plus more. Adam Hochschild is a good speaker that I enjoyed listening to and learning from.. Glad to hear his questioning of when certain good judges quit due to major disagreement it then opens the door to what I'd say bad judges beholden to Trump's injustice.

It wasn't judges who quit but attorneys. Their choice was to follow illegal orders or resign.

Good conversation. The book under discussion was fascinating. Anyone interested in US history would do her/himself a favor and check it out.

Every administration has had disasters and catastrophic events to navigate. Trump/Musk/Vance will demonstrate their incompetence when faced with such events. That's when their sycophants and true believers will question the paths they have chosen.

I learn so much more listening to these great historians. So great to see Jen using her extraordinary talents in writing and interviewing.

I read his book when it came out and was floored to learn yet again how much of our history reflects poorly on us. I was excited for your interview and it didn’t disappoint. I look forward to hearing from him again.

I read the book by Rachel Maddow, Prequel. I just finished. It parallels what is going on in the current moment. How Germany infiltrated(1930-1945) the US politics, and the military. What I'm assuming it wasn't finished after the 1921. It got worse and continued until WW2. When we entered the war. Many of the bad actors became patriotic. I appreciate the author's perception. But my understanding is a fascist movement continued after 1921 and continues today.
