Leeda is beautiful. I wish more people would see chickens - and pigs and cows - as sentient animals deserving of humane treatment and not as food.

Please subscribe to Civil Discourse, Joyce Vance’s Substack. She posts about her chickens, dog and cats often. So heartwarming!

I had chickens (for eggs) for years. I always found them better entertainment than any of the various media available to humans. When people said to me that chickens were stupid animals, I always responded with "chickens know everything they need to know to be successful chickens. How many humans can make a similar statement about being human".

more complicated by far to be a human..

Are there nasty chickens? I bet not.

Nasty? That is a human judgement. ;-)

But there IS the famous pecking order, and I witnessed it being strongly enforced!

yes it's cruel at times... some who keep chickens have to de-beak. As far as human judgement.... I can't help it.

I also wish more people saw "meat" animals as sentient creatures who deserve to not be abused to turn them into food. I'm a long-time vegetarian, going in a vegan direction. And Joyce, your chickens are beautiful! I love seeing them every time you share photos.

What a beautiful chicken! I need to see if there is still some normalcy in the world. Thank you. Also I would love to see what you knit! I've been a knitter for decades and find fellow Knitters to be among some of the best people in the world.

I didn't know anyone else gave their hen a bubble bath! I first started when a hen had an egg break and had to have a sitz bath of sorts. I don't live where I can have hens now, but they were such a joy.

A beautiful hen, but it also seems to be a portrait of every single member of the United States Congress.

Actually, chickens are incredibly brave and loyal and will defend their families to the death. Our cowardly Congress critters can’t seem to even poke their sorry noses above the deep doo doo that dumpty dishes out.

Please make a distinction between the "Ooh, the big bad man will primary me!" Trump Cult and the Dems who are fighting and suing and trying to stop this coup. Saying that all of Congress is a waste of space doesn't help the ones who aren't and may cost them votes when people give up on all of politics.

Some distinction, yes. But I don’t buy into the whole ‘love it or leave it’ scenario. It has taken way too long for most Congressional Democrats to get off the mark and we need to call it what it is. And choosing a middle-aged white man from MN to be the new party chair does not exactly engender confidence that they will be able to reach young voters. Why not a Black woman from Atlanta or Philadelphia or Los Angeles or Phoenix or Chicago or Houston? I’m a 72 year old dyed-in-the-wool Democratic woman but I was very disappointed at how the men worked so hard to make Harris into Clinton; Bill not Hillary, of course. Why do we still ask that ancient Carville what he thinks? It’s not the economy — it’s never been the economy. It’s rampant racism and misogyny. Republicans just tell pollsters it’s the economy because they are ashamed that they hate women and Black people in power. Young voters in big cities are our base and instead of focusing on them to give them reasons to vote, we keep trying to convince the inconvincible red hats in the midwest and southeast. We cannot win by trying to out-Republican the Republicans. The Cheneys brought probably 0-3 Republican voters in their wake; courting them was a betrayal of Democrats and a waste of credibility. Dems are never going to win if we abandon our cities — and we need to be loud and proud that we stand with the people, not the oligarchs or the cowards.

Good point. Humans are always insulting other humans by calling them "Chicken!". I believe the new, useful insult you can use to insult a chicken is to call them "Congressperson!" :-)
