Trump may be beholden to Putin, but President Xi has incredible leverage over Musk. One ill word about Tesla from Xi, and Musk is at best the 3rd richest person in the world. Tesla is far too dependent on the Chinese market and their Chinese factory for Musk to do anything but suck up to China. I would not be surprised if the Gulf of America idea didn’t come from him.
Thank you for this important perspective. My only concern is that you dismiss Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico as unserious, not really of the serious nature of China’s renaming efforts. Yet, as the not-for-profit Associated Press continues to use Gulf of Mexico in its reporting (tech companies have made the switch as commanded), it finds itself banned from the Oval Office and Air Force One (my source is Heather Cox Richardson). Retaliatory actions like these have real consequences for freedom of the press and its use of internationally accepted names. I put this into the serious column. I don’t understand anything about Trump’s claims on the Gulf of Mexico if they are serious like China is serious about the South China Sea. I’m sure you could explain them to us. You may need to do that sooner than you expected.
Why should we expect anything BUT childish acts from Trump? He functions emotionally and mentally at the level of an undisciplined overindulged spoiled toddler who views the world as his private playground filled with toys to do with as he wishes and populated by persons solely put on this earth to do HIS bidding and meet HIS demands. The concept of "consequences" for his actions is totally foreign to him as are the concepts of duty, service to others, compassion, and responsibility to meet the expectations of his office. Terms such as "we", '"you", "ours" and "yours" are not part of his vocabulary which has always and will always only focus on the ONLY terms that matter to him.... "I", "ME", and "MINE". Why should we be the least bit surprised to find he feels the Gulf of Mexico is his to do with as he wishes as he essentially flips his middle finger at the world's cartographers.
Kay Ivey, the governor of Alabama is already referring to the Gulf as Gulf of America. So crazy. Does our local meteorologist call it “Gulf of America” if there is a hurricane brewing out there? Can’t wait until we can vote her out.
"Kay Ivey, the governor of Alabama is already referring to the Gulf as Gulf of America."
Well, good for her. I still call it the Gulf of Mexico. I don't believe any of us will be rounded up and put into a gulag because of we still think of that body of water as the Gulf of Mexico.
The AP has been essentially banished from access to our mad king, for sticking with the name that body of water was given 550 years ago. Rather than showing solidarity with the AP, over the abridgment of First Amendment press freedoms, the quislings in corporate media have fallen into line. This was entirely a test of subrogation, and the corporate media failed miserably. Once are freedoms are shed so easily and cheaply, coming back for more and more becomes inevitable. The frightening lessons of history are being ignored.

Trivial arguments by a press agency that has no love for Republicans/Trump. It's the AP's call as to whether or not it wants to kiss the ring.
"...the quislings in corporate media..."
Most of whom own outlets that, just like the AP, hate Trump.
On the positive side, the press have seen more of Trump and asked questions of him in the past three weeks than probably the last two years of the Biden administration. If they really want to get to Trump, then don't show up at his pressers and don't make him the lead story every day. Trump absolutely loves being the center of attention. But the press can't help themselves.
"Chinese maps label almost the entire South China Sea as theirs."
Yet you said Trump's renaming the Gulf of Mexico doesn't fundamentally change anything: "...Mexico is unlikely to redraw its own maps, nor will the United Nations amend maritime boundaries...".
Do you believe other nations will redraw their maps with China's new declaration or the UN will change things just because China renames some geographical feature?
I'm asking because I really don't know: Who gets to do that? WE might call it the Gulf of America, but the rest of the world certainly doesn't have to, right? If it's the president's prerogative, does that mean the name can change at the whim of the person in office? If so, I'm buying stock in the atlas and globe companies!

It should be called the delusional gulf...........will we ever breach it

The ONLY Gulf of America is the space between Donald Trumps ears.
This “unserious” act is emblematic of the greater scourge that is this little man's massive ego.
When will the democratic congressional leadership resist? Schumer/ Jeffries wake up and do your job or get out of the way for people who will.

In a new browser window (I use Chrome, for now)
1. Enter "Gulf of Mexico" - Google will return "Gulf of America"
2. Click on the 3 dots to the right of "Gulf of America"
3. Click "Send Feedback", then select "general feedback" from the blue banner
4. Click "Inaccurate Content"
5. Express your opinions about this ridiculous distraction!
