So... in T1, CNN was the target, fought and won. Not easy, certainly, but survivable.

Here, T2, CBS is the target and we are told is unwillingly going to give in to blackmail in order to protect the merger that it needs to survive.

And Jen asks the question on everyone's mind - what's the point of survival as a news organization that is no longer credible as a source of independent journalism.

What's gained? What's the point?

The point is that CBS is not in control, the corporate owner is. And she appears to not care less, for her it's all about money. She was raised in wealth, which se inherited.

60 Minutes has been a trusted source for me and I feel very sad about this loss.

It wasn't that long ago that we had a functional F.C.C. that was not overtly political. As with our healthcare system, we have watched the corporate takeover of an essential component to our democracy. In retrospect the downward spiral of journalism that we've all witnessed has been a long time in the making. A free press and corporate profits are just incompatible. Fortunately, there are alternatives like sub-stacks. Meanwhile fellow readers can do their vest to protest with their dollars. No paramount programming in this household.

Perhaps most disheartening is how few corporate leaders have shown an iota of courage in responding to the Republican party's assault on our democracy (they are responsible for everything Trump does)

No apparent boost from hi-er ed pushback!?!? is this worth phone calls to … whom? CBS or Paramount (I don’t subscribe either) btw , corporate greed doesn’t work in health care either! Substack seems to be ground truth option - until some corp dangles $$$$ & we’re back in the corner again.

When you're dealing with trump, you're dealing with the mob. If you pay the mob once, you have to pay them forever. CBS' parent company is going to choose greed over journalism because of the merger.

The constant barrage of contribution requests I get suggests a determination that the only way to fight money is money. I would suggest that a more successful strategy might be developing an expanding person to person network to convince people that preserving the rule of law, protecting freedom of speech, combatting the development of a national criminal protection racket, and establishing a balance of power between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches is essential to preserving a happy, safe, and livable United States.

This is a war and we need to stop playing like it’s croquet.

In other words, Paramount is scared shitless of Trump & won't stand up to him. Got it. The world is full of cowards. If they had some guts, they'd fight to the proverbial death because $$$ is not everything, except to the greedy people who run big corporations.

I think that all of the corporate owned media is basically in a freefall as to credibility and integrity in reporting. Very few of these entities have fought back or taken a stand for truthful reporting. Not surprising, as it has been getting harder to get objective and in depth reporting on any level anymore. The Contrarian and others that are materializing, are the answer as far as I am concerned. I think more will turn to these innovative and breaking news outlets for up to date reporting that answers real questions and reports the unvarnished truth. There is an urgent need for this as our mainstream news is now functioning as a propaganda outlet for the current corrupt administration in the Whitehouse.

If CBS and Sheri Redstone, thinks that just this one concession will satisfy the mob boss running the country, they haven't been paying attention. With these criminals, the demands never end and if they don't stand up now, it's going to result in a giant toilet bowl swirl for CBS.

You've missed the point. CBS has nothing to say about this. Look up Sheri Redstone.

So Sheri Redstone is willing to toss the First Amendment into the dumpster in the interest of making a few billion for Paramount ? The thing is that if she capitulates, then every time Trump has a problem with what's on 60 Minutes or reported on CBS News, all he has to do is threaten them on social media and stories will be pulled, reporters with be fired, and apologies will be granted. Subsequently, reporters/editors will be self-censoring so that they don't upset Der Fuhrer. 60 Minutes will be reduced to broadcasting celebrity profiles, hit pieces on Democrats and other puff pieces, including a multi-part profile of Melania and Trump's kids. Bezos has already gone down that road to the tune of $40 million.

Where the hell is our free press?

I think free press started its nosedive with the advent of FOX news. News programs are commodity like any other network program and rely on viewer numbers. FOX has locked in on news as entertainment. Look how many talking heads on that network have massive numbers of fans compared to any other network’s lineup. The one competitor that had a faithful following was 60 Minutes.

The traditional news sources started caving long ago, but that is not new. Papers have been known to feed their readers information that helps to support what the owner wants to see.

Hearst used this tactic successfully. Consider the witch hunt spurned on by McCarthy and the reactions of the television and movie executives to anyone under investigation.

The truly informed public look to a variety of sources to get information and refines their views based on their analysis. Unfortunately, we have reached a point where we cannot rely on many of our traditional media sources to provide honest truth about our nation and our world. I still rely on NPR and PBS, as well as The Guardian, and columns like this.

I don’t know if those who have capitulated to the emperor will ever recover from this transgression against honest reporting. I don’t think I will readily forget or forgive them.

Ohhhh, rush limbaugh and newt gingrich get time stamp awards. Fox nudes just take it to a capitalist level with an untethered one-sided view. Rupert Murdoch certainly deserves being murdered by one of his wolf bastards Romulus Remus assholes. What a disgusting ring of familial criminals! Their bones can’t be hidden deep enough when they die. Pathetic excuses that some people call humans. Cretins.
