Thank you for sharing this. You are so close to the fight; it’s inspiring. Thanks also for your legal leadership. It’s a great encourager for those of us who often feel lost in the fight.
Great piece, Norm! I signed up for the Contrarian the day I heard about it in January. I am astounded how quickly you were able to assemble a full-service, multimedia news, commentary, and education site. It is a breath of fresh air as the corpses continue to dance over at the MSM. Kudos to you and Jen for shepherding this into a juggernaught!
Great writing. My father was shot by a Nazi sniper in France. He recovered in England and went back to fight during the battle of the bulge. His war wound came back to haunt him and ultimately took years off his life. How can I support this administration that coddles the neo nazi movement. It's unbelievable that one lifelong conman has such a grip on 70 million voters.
They are not just voters Stephen, they are also stupid and ignorant for voting against their own interests and in favor of the 1% that would get all the wealth being transferred from the bottom, where the ignorant belong, up to the top where they look down at them saying "thanks fools". No wonder trump loves the uneducated.
"Voters." How about the inconsistencies? Voter intimidation? How about those who were too scared to vote? Those who are "marks?" “Those who vote decide nothing. Those who count the vote decide everything.”
A beautiful reminder of America’s past as a beacon for good people seeking a better life, and at the same time a sad tale of how far we’ve fallen with our current posture of abuse of those folks. For your parents, and my grandparents, and everyone who has been warmly welcomed to our country and who have enriched it culturally and spiritually, we must fight hard against the forces that would drag us into a racist, xenophobic, homophobic, misogynistic , anti-semitic cesspool, a bizarro world reflection of a once-great nation. Thanks for all that you do.
American soldiers fought and died to protect the world from Fascism. Now the their grandchildren knowlingly voted for a fascist. We must save our Democratic Republic by doing everything we can to vote every single Republican out of office. We don't have to see our sons and brothers killed and maimed. We won't have to live with food rationing. We just have to spend a little money, time and effort to avoid a new dark age.
I appreciate the symmetry (fighting fascism abroad vs. voting for a fascist at home), but Norm (and our Constitution) made a different point that is important:
"We can [help] by recommitting ourselves to defending our democracy. To memorialize our veterans’ sacrifices is to attend to the fragile, unfinished work of fighting autocracy and building a country worthy of their service. It is to hold tight to the idea of America, even when its practice falters. To do our part, as they did—not on distant battlefields, but on our streets, among our communities, and in our courthouses."
The cause for which "American soldiers fought and died" was not "to protect the world from Fascism." Americans always have fought and died for the cause emphasized in our oaths and federal law (5 U.S.C. 3331): every person "except the President, elected or appointed to an office of honor or profit in the civil service or uniformed services," promises and must fight to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic." As Article II emphasized, the president promises and must fight to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States."
Identifying and opposing the ways Trump or his supporters are violating our Constitution is more helpful than saying that everyone who voted for him simply "knowingly voted for a fascist."
Thank you for a poignant tribute to our veterans and the fallen. I'm a Gold Star mother who joins the protest because I don't want my son to have died only to allow a dictator to cripple our country
I am so very sorry for your loss! And I am sending you my condolences. After my husband of 40 years died (and I know how different it is to lose an adult child who served our country), I realized it is never too late to try and provide a tiny bit of solace...especially today.
Thank you, and I am sorry about the death of your dear husband. Grief is a rough journey, but I have learned much along the way. There is an organization for military survivors, Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors or TAPS. I volunteer as a Peer Mentor who walks beside a newly grieving mother. Thank you for offering me solace on this somber day.
Joan, you are so welcome! It is a rough journey, and I, too, have learned. My father and his three brothers all served in WWII at the same time. And, were lucky to return alive. I have always had a special place in my heart for veterans and their families, and such great empathy for someone like you who has experienced an inestimable loss. I’m glad you have been able to volunteer at TAPS, and walk beside a grieving mother. Take care!
I'm glad you explained your beliefs so beautifully here. I share them and cringe at what is not happening in Washington - to counteract so much of what is blatantly unconstitutional. I fervently hoped that Congress would take charge and coral the Presidential uncontrollable actions and reactions. The Supreme Court has give the Presidency unusual power to do whatever on and off "the rails." On this Memorial Day, although my reverence for those who gave their lives for us lives on, I find myself at odds with my own federal government. How completely awful that makes me feel.
I loved the quote “Your job is not to finish the work—but neither are you, the child of free people, not to do your share.”
In our own small way, Democracy Labs makes it easier to quickly understand current issues with maps and infographics. We make it interactive so people can how bills impact their lives. Who's responsible? And what action they can take? Here are some recent blogs on current issues you highlighted.

I am waiting for some comment and analyses of the grotesque speech tRump made at West Point this past week. Chutzpah and lack of any understanding of those to whom he was speaking made the appearance seem like something out of a Far Side nightmare dream.
When/how to get the Congress to grow a pair and impeach this petty tyrant should be the number one agenda item every day. How many people are aware of the little provision he and congress sneaked into the Big Bullshit Bill that, if it stays there, gives him free rein to ignore court orders and eliminate elections on his whim???
When we fly the flags today, they should be flown upside down - the international signal for distress. How many of those brave souls would be spinning in their graves if they had an inkling of what has happened in this country.
My greatest frustration is not with tRump himself. It is with the spineless, balls-free congress. Congressional service was never meant to be a "career." It was meant to be a time when those who could afford to take time away from work and family to serve for a short time did so and got out. We have devolved into a country where political science is a goal rather than a thing to be used as a learning experience and a giving back for the freedom we enjoy in this country.
Edward, I agree with everything you wrote in both comments. And, this is my rant today, which explains some of the reasons, our leaders wrote a Declaration of Independence from the King of England (with some edits for space).
He has refused his Assent to Laws for the public good. (Trump is ignoring laws.)
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures. (Mike Johnson)
He has endeavored to prevent the population of these States; for that purpose obstructing the Laws for Naturalization of Foreigners… (In this case, it's deportation.)
He has made Judges dependent on his Will alone, for the tenure of their offices.... (The 6 Conservative Judges on SCOTUS, were paid for by Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society, and receive gifts and trips from the rich.)
He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harass our people...(DOGE, Elon Musk and his people; firing thousands of civil servants, ICE etc.)
He has affected to render the Military independent of and superior to the Civil power. (Why is Trump having a military parade with a such a show of force?)
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws; giving his Assent to their Acts of pretended Legislation.
For cutting off our Trade with all parts of the world
We have to work with what we have. We need a few Republican senators to stop the "big beautiful" fascist budget. To Trump, "unitary executive" is a dictatorship and Congress will become an anachronism.
Norm, how special your parents story is to us. It brought tears to my eyes! Thank you for sharing your tender thoughts.
WE must stick together and get behind this horror show from the White House. It depends on all of us to call it out for what it represents. We are seeing very corrupt times! None of this is any good for our nation, but we cannot give up. How so many voters fell for this “clown show” is beyond the principles of our normal citizens. We must be strong and go on a campaign to save this country!
Maybe they'll learn that for them, "never again" means do not attack Israel's population killing 1,200 and taking away hundreds as hostages. Grandparents taking care of babies, young couples enjoying a concert all of them victims of an irrational act of aggression. If Hamas would have any conscience and concern for the Palestinians thay should have recognized they lost long ago, return all the hostages and negotiate an agreement with Netanyahu, in my view, a terrible person. That could have saved thousand of Gazans lives. Please kasperhauser, reconsider and have a global view of the situation.
We will be wise the day when we can carry two thoughts and ideals -- not just one -- in our hearts and minds, side by side, together In different ways. All sides in the Middle East bear responsibility for their own behavior. Israelis, for backing settlement policies for decades which have brought nothing but cruelty to Palestinians; Palestinians, for backing a clique of murderous, fundamentalist lunatics who have brought them nothing but ruin; America, for refusing to enforce the terms of the two-state accords it worked so hard to get both parties to agree to. The recent murder of two Israeli Embassy staffers, themselves part of an Israeli-Palestinian dialogue, by a disjointed, deluded American claiming he did it "for" somebody else epitomizes our stalemate and exposes everyone's twisted priorities. And Trump openly discusses "re-settling" a million Palestinians in Libya, much as Eichmann once cynically proposed a Jewish homeland in Madagascar, to make way for his golf courses and hotels. What a horrible situation.
Unfortunately, there are extremism on both sides and extremism on one side feeds extremism on the other. Netanyahu's main responsibility is the safety and survival of the Israeli people and within those parameters is to guarantee the Hamas won't ever again repeat such criminal act as the one on October 7th. On the other hand similar responsibility falls on Hamas to protect the Palestinian people in Gaza, however, once Hamas was defeated militarily, instead of surrender and negotiate some honorable peace accord decided, with no possibility of accomplish anything positive, to keep fighting without any consideration for the suffering and massive death of the people they were supposed to protect.
Somehow it reminds me of Hitler, that knowing perfect clear that Germany had not chances of winning, keep pushing his armies to defeat after defeat costing the lives of millions more unnecessary. I'm tempted to keep going but I hope my writing so far clarify a very complex and ongoing situation. Ultimately, should be up to the Palestinians to speak up, as they tried not long ago and demand to Hamas to face reality.
Hamas is gone. It's in Qatar making deals with your beau ideal, Trump. Now it's civilians and land - one being murdered, the other stolen. There's no Hamas left. Now it's just murder, and piece of shit apologists (grinbank) like you who love it.
So your response is to support the Nazi regime that drumpf is trying to bring to the U.S. because that's better for the Gazans? Where's your indignation about the deals made by drumpf for his own enrichment and by Hamas leaders, for their own enrichment, who live high off the hog in Qatar while "their" people are starving? No one who's sane supports Netanyahu and his zealot cronies, but there have been decades of decent Israeli leadership that Hamas could have negotiated with, and instead it hid rocket launchers in schools and hospitals and sent them over Israeli schools and hospitals. I was there in person to witness such an attack.
Maybe I've read about 20. Two very funny ones. They ones that sheltered people. The ones where they didn't get out in time. Those that they had to suffer newborns to keep them from crying and the rest of the babies being found. The one where the mother gave her blond blue eyes baby to her Christian friends (from the babies father) because the mother looked Jewish. Her Christian friend her age kept the little baby risking their lives. They got her to the US. (then I track them) got to California and had died in her sixties. If you read any, you have to be very careful to see if they are fiction or non-fiction. Amazon is not good about marking them. My favorite is of the Bug River one. The little boy age five youngest of seven children ran errands. The Five year old wrote the book after he got to NYC.He would run errands as he was too small for anyone to be suspicious. His older brother lived in an apartment and fell in love with the next door goy, she fell in love with him. Married divorced. At the end of the war as the Russians and Germans were invading Bulgaria? Belgrade? I just remember the "B" The got man found an abandoned warehouse for the family, no heat, no electricity He got this family in the warehouse plus all their related family saving the lives of 40 plus in that extended Jewish family. They could glance out the window as the war went on their street. Russians push the Germans back, Germans pushed the Russians back, etc, "firstdown" I traced him to Florida and lost track of him. You could start with the "Jews behind the chimney" Not the right name. The daughter of the house Goy would bicycle out to the country to get extra food for the Jews they were hiding. And yes, the Dutch were paid by the Jewish for keeping them alive. She would have been killed by the Nazis had they caught on. Some many saviors stories and ones who didn't make it.
