I have heard that often letters go into the trash bin and no one can get through when they call. I guess it depends on the Congress person. Amy Klobuchar's staff always sends an acknowledgement (form letter) immediately in response to my emails. Then Amy follows up with a letter to the people who commented about a certain issue. She describes how she is dealing with it. Amy has clout and she uses it well. She knows how to handle bullies.

I don't know for certain that that's the case. My point is that people should keep their minds open rather than focusing on someone who seems perfect to them. I knew Jamie Raskin's mother, and my brother and sister in law live in his district, and he is one of the better politicians, but I just think it's a good idea to keep one's mind open about presidential candidates.

I can tell you that it was deeply frustrating to me that Kamala Harris didn't win. I probably had the first HARRIS bumper sticker in the country. The morning after Biden passed the torch, I made it--a somewhat laborious process as my printer was malfunctioning--and scotch taped to my rear bumper.

As for women leading countries, I come from a family where there have been a lot of competent women. My mother, her sister, and their mother had PhDs--which my grandmother got in 1915, and my sister, a public health nurse, organized the vaccination for COVID of everyone in Fairfax County VA.

And there have been some great heads of state who were women, including Claudia Sheinbaum, the Jewish head of Mexico, Golda Meir (Israel), and Queen Elizabeth, who was really what I would call a ceremonial head of state, but she did a damn good job of it and she had a wicked sense of humor. Here's an example of that.

I think the protests will need to be a balance between doing things that attract media and not giving an excuse for martial law. Right now, it would be cops who don't want to be part of this, but if Hegseth purges rationality from the military, they will be right there alongside Musk's junior crew.

Expand full comment
Wayne Shaw's avatar

I agree with that. While rallies alone won't stop the Musk Presidency and Trump's attempted, illegal decrees, they are a part of it, but in a way that doesn't give them an excuse (read=quarter) for an attempted crackdown. If the latter cannot be avoided, there are ways to do it that make the other side look ludicrous. Which they are. For my part, I won't say what I will or won't do, except this: I have no hesitation in aiding and abetting a peaceful protester who needs refuge. Seeing the video of this demonstration in front of Treasury brought me to tears of happiness. It's premature to feel relieved, but it makes me feel hope. We have a long road ahead of us, but that so many people are standing up and protesting - including finally some of our elected officials - gives me hope. I have been calling my Democratic senators every day. Call their local offices because the DC phone mail boxes are full. And make separate calls for each unfit nominee you're urging them to vote against. Separate calls for RFK Jr, Gabbard, and Vought. Congressional staffers log constituent calls individually; you want each of your views to be counted.

Sign up for Indivisible's emails - they send actions steps every week and they do a zoom every Thursday that is very motivating. This demonstration was organized by Indivisible!

Also, donate to the wonderful lawyers who are fighting this coup - Democracy Forward, Public Citizen, and Citizens for Responsibility & Ethics in Washington are great groups. They are suing the Trump admin constantly and they need our support.
