Many news reports on the Minnesota assassin describe him as a "devout christian." First of all, I am beginning to think that term is an oxymoron. Second, I will take any atheist over any so-called "christian." All the atheists I know are better people than any of the supposed christians I know.

Hi, "devout" atheist here.

I respect people's beliefs. But as you state, those who claim to be "christians" and say and act the opposite way as "What would Jesus do?" are no christians.

Like that Leavitt girl with her big cross who's first non lie we still haven't heard.

It also makes me sick that this kind of people will sit on a bench in some church on Sunday pretending to be moved by Jesus.

It would be more accurate to describe Boelyer as a self-identified "Christian ".

Trump was not "nearly killed" last summer. Not even close. He supposedly suffered a wound to his ear -- a wound of which there has never been a visible trace in the time since. And the supposed shooter, whom the crack Secret Service team somehow managed not to discover while he was in place, was conveniently shot dead before he could say word one to anyone.

Prof. Klaas, you should know better.

I think you’re heading into the conspiracy theory weeds. People were injured and at least one person died because of the bullets fired by that young man. The bullet that went past his ear struck elsewhere. If he hadn’t turned and moved when he was speaking, he very well might have been killed.

Perhaps, but there are a couple of problems.

First, the fact that the shooter's bullets killed one person and injured others does not mean Trump was "nearly killed." Had Trump been grievously wounded, that would rise to the level of "nearly killed," but a possibly grazed ear doesn't make the cut as far as I'm concerned.

Second, the external part of the ear is mostly cartilage; it doesn't repair itself after an injury like that. So the subsequent pictures of Trump's unscathed right ear raise questions.

I know it's impossible to prove a negative; all I am saying is that the pattern of events, especially the Secret Service's egregious failure to establish a perimeter and coordinate with local law enforcement, plus the strangely unblemished appearance of the ear that was supposedly struck by either a bullet or a bullet fragment, makes one wonder. I could easily envision a Republican dirty-tricks operative recruiting Crooks (the shooter) and telling him, "Get up on top of that building; no one will bother you. When Trump appears, take a few shots, but try not to hit him. And we'll take care of you afterwards, don't worry."

I also lived in Mpls and worked with Melissa Hortman many years ago getting a special legislative enactment for my client, a St. Paul firefighter, (and a constituent of hers) so he could get the full pension he had earned. She took it up immediately, set up a hearing/testimony for us in front of a legislative committee, and sponsored the special enactment. She spent all of about 3 minutes with us, but she didn't have to spend any longer because she got it and got the job done. I live in Illinois now, but was pained to hear the news Saturday morning. Not Melissa Hortman. Of course the murder of anyone is a tragedy, but of politicians, she has struck me as honest, straightforward, and approached her work with no-nonsense genuine right-mindedness. An excellent role model for girl children. She was not flashy, and I remember when she took grief for chiding male legislators for holding male-only card games when they should have been debating but stuck to her guns (https://www.minnpost.com/politics-policy/2017/04/melissa-hortman-still-isnt-sorry/). It takes a very black heart to want to shut down such a vibrant voice. It is chilling that this is the direction things have turned to, and I hope we can turn them back.

She sounds like a truly exceptional person. I grieve for your loss, and that of all who knew her.

Little has been made of her vote to remove a GOP threat to shut down government by voting against her own party and giving the GOP a tie. It tore her up to do it. But she did the right thing, forestalling something even uglier and crueler. Chuck Schumer did the same thing in the Senate earlier this year. He’s gotten grief, but the vicious GOP would have shut down government without a second thought had the bill not passed.

Both these leaders faced a true Sophie’s Choice and did something bad to forestall something worse. There’s a nobility in that which mustn’t get overlooked.

I did not know her personally and haven't lived in MN but her death is disturbing, nonetheless. It makes us all feel vulnerable.

Trump didn't create the monster that the Republican Party has become. He has just reaped the harvest of what the Fascists such as the Heritage Foundation, the Christian Dominion Ayatollahs, & KKK-like groups have been cultivating for about 55 years. He repeats conspiracy theories that someone else creates. Remember the Birthers? Remember the Tea Baggers? Remember the "Reagan Democrats" who were courted by Ronnie with racist "dog whistles"? Commander Cupcake didn't create the MAGA Voodoo Matrix. He just named it.

Mr. Klaas, please explain why your report is accompanied by a photo of a MAGA rally/demonstration from 2020. And with NO cutline! Readers who are not familiar with St. Paul or its capitol building probably assume that St. Paul is a MAGA city. NOTHING could be further from the truth. I live in neighboring Minneapolis so I know what I'm talking about. For someone with your professional credentials, you and/or your editor should know better.

There’s little doubt in my mind that Donald Trump and his allies and backers will be the death of democracy in the USA. Political murders via public incitements to his MAGA minions are just one of the insidious tactics he and Project 2025 are using to destroy our imperfect but beloved country.
