This has to be shoved into the faces of those seniors who voted for Trump. Seriously. They've been coddled too long. And don't tell me they didn't know.

These idiots who ignore reality...I hope they suffer. It's a terrible thing to say, but they asked for it. And until they do, their traitor-in-chief will continue to erode at the beneficial things the Biden admin. tried to do for Americans. They need to hurt before they wake up.

unfortunately the rest of us will suffer along with them despite voting for democrats up & down the ticket.

Old New Yorker cartoon: two intellectuals (you can tell they are because they have corduroy jackets with elbow patches, long hair and are standing in front of a wall shelf of books). One says "Those who fail to understand history are condemned to repeat it!" The other replies, "And those of us who do understand history are condemned to repeat it with them."

Exactly so. The hope (and it's a faint one) is that at least a few of the Trumpers and those who didn't vote will get energized once they discover that their pockets are getting picked big-time. It may influence how they vote in the midterm election. At least that would be a beginning.

When those fools have to decide between life sustaining meds or dinner for their kids, then they'll get energized.

Actually, nothing is fair in the form of vulture capitalism practiced in the United States. It's totally a trickle-UP system.

That would be fine if they were the only ones to suffer. They are not. And he doesn't care who suffers as long as he can continue to carry out his vendetta.

As soon as the election was called, the suffering for those who rejected the traitor was all but inevitable. I know this. It's maga and every other moron who voted for the traitor who refused to see it, but they will. I just hope that their suffering opens their eyes and they don't stand for it. And I hope those of us who voted against the scourge find help when they need it, from friends, family, strangers or state gov't., enough to hold us until we rid ourselves of the orange traitor and his band of criminals.

I really don't want anyone to suffer, particularly at the hands of this moron. But it appears that pain is the only stimulus left to get the message across. Not sure what you mean by "government insurance." As the wife of a miltary retiree, Medicare is mandated to be my primary insurance BY LAW, and my military/government insurance, Tricare For Life, is seen as supplemental insurance. Anything that affects Medicare affects all of us military retirees. I suspect it's the same for other retired government workers, that Medicare is considered the primary insurance.

I don't think highly of AARP-recommended insurance. When I decided to purchase Long Term Care insurance, I compared coverage by a number of companies. The AARP-recommended long term care coverage was $800 more for the exact same coverage I chose from Allianz.

I once had auto insurance coverage from The Hartford but about 2 years ago the cost of my auto insurance coverage suddenly increased by about $200. When I called to ask why, I was told that I needed to be an AARP member (i.e. pay AARP annual membership) to retain the lower rate I had had for well over a decade. I immediately cancelled and am now with a different company for my auto and condo coverage at even lower rates than I had had with The Hartford.

The early actions of the Administration (and the silence of the Republican congress) tell us two things clearly: we are going to make you less safe and we are going make your life more expensive. Less safe by releasing violent criminals from prison and less safe by withdrawing from international organizations that are our eyes and ears on global issues like health and climate. More expensive by stripping away protections consumers were just getting from drug price gouging, more expensive by eliminating energy efficiency standards, and more expensive by slapping tariffs on goods we count on. Less safe/more expensive is the honest motto of the people in power in Washington.

Expand full comment

If this is all done by executive order, those Republicans in Congress maybe won't have had anything to do with it or even realized. They'll for sure be hearing from their constituents, for sure, but can they really do anything about it? I hope they're all voted out of office in 2026.

Expand full comment

The Republicans in Congress have coddled, enabled, and finally bent the knee to the Administration. I think it is advantageous in the long run to tie them firmly to the Administration and to make no distinction between them. That way they too, firmly, are forced to own up to their actions and inactions.

The Congressional Republicans have known exactly what was going on and have been planning on this for years.

Expand full comment

Expand full comment

My understanding too. We need clarification on whether an Executive Order overrides existing legislation. This seems to be overriding a Biden Executive order and as the article states has ended three initiatives: "With the stroke of his pen, Trump removed a $2 price cap on certain generic drugs, did away with a provision that would improve access to high-cost therapies for Medicaid recipients, and ended an effort to expedite the evidence-gathering process for new drugs."

Expand full comment

An EO cannot override legislation. It's really just a suggestion, or an "order" for departments within the government to get things done the way the EO author wants. They still need to go through the proper motions (vote, court hearing, etc.) to change legislation. And it is much harder to get it to change an actual Amendment, such as the 14th, allowing birthright citizenship.

Expand full comment

Then again, with the current administration . . . who knows. We have the unstable genius back so it's almost anything goes.

Yes, but stuff Dumpy is reversing is executive orders by Pres. Biden. One executive order overturns another, I guess.
