There are many talented, capable, and ethical Democrats who are ready to take higher positions of leadership. People need to hear them and see them now, not 3 months before the next election. Thank you for highlighting Governor Moore.
We actually suffer from an abundance of riches on our side. Wes Moore, Gretchen Whitmer, Josh Shapiro, Gavin Newsome, Pete Buttigieg, Andy Beshear, Joel Ossoff, Tammy Duckworth....the list of capable, talented, strategic, effective leaders who command respect, win elections and get things done is long indeed.
One thing they all share in common is relative youth and energy. Over the decades, both political parties have evolved into ossified gerontocracies without many ways for young blood, much less new ideas and solutions, to rise to the top. We have our work cut out for us...
I'll take "ossified" President Biden any time over the degenerate felon in the White House. Stop the generational war. We don't need "youth and energy." While that's a bonus, we need people of Wes Moore's (and the others' you mention) intelligence, patriotism, and compassion.
I disagree with you. It's not waging a "generational war" but simply stating a fact. I would have taken President Biden anytime, too. But the country wouldn't for a second time. Did you fail to notice the energy Kamala Harris brought to a campaign that actually wasn't going anywhere until she became the nominee?
We need many of the qualities of our recent President Joe Biden as well. Why is it that many people refuse to recognize some fine people whose actions are strong and highly beneficial but have only subtle projections announcing deserved credit? Modesty comes in many forms. There are people who are wise in presenting their beliefs and act to make lives better while being well recognized, and there are less outspoken people like President Joe Biden, who also put their best wisdom, character, and actions into helping people work together to make life better outwardly to far reaching areas. Each person, regardless of degree of outgoing personality, should be recognized and appreciated for doing so much good. That does not mean every person is totally perfect, but we do have many people to thank for their wisdom, efforts, and sacrifices which helped our country and world be better for people they do not even know personally. (Since this tiny screen will not allow me to proofread, I hope this message will be read as intended. I tried to check while writing, but at times the phone makes unauthorized changes after I have typed.)
Joe Biden is a righteous, humble, deeply religious man who never placed much stock in self-promotion for its own sake. It's a trait that maybe makes for good saints, but in a world dominated by cruel, self-promoting, made-for-trash-TV louts like Donald Trump, often loses out. I think Biden knew this, but it wasn't in his nature to out-Trump the Felon. All to say that a republic can't survive without an educated, moral electorate who refuse to cater to their own reptilian cortexes in the voting booth --- something our Founders implicitly understood.
Thank you so much! I definitely will try to use it. My phone has made some horrible unauthorized changes, some obvious, some hilarious, and at least one of them was an extremely serious change that took place.
I'm not surprised. The people that brought us autocorrect are an intergral part of the stupidation and lazification of America. Let them twist THOSE words! lol
We can embrace his support/views against MAGA, authoritarianism and Trump. But he is still a very conservative Republican with a christonationalist bent. Accept his good deeds but he should never be 'added to our list' until his conversion from the dark side is complete. Ditto for Cheney.
I agree. However I do not think he should be 'added to the list' of potential Dem candidates in future elections (if we have any). That was what I was replying to.
Never forget Rep. Kinzinger. He may be a conservative, but our country needs honest, serious members of conflicting points of view. And we need to bring compromise back into the workings of government. Our citizenry is diverse, and all legal, non-fascist points of view must be considered fairly in our Democracy.
I am not a party follower. I like good politicians who see reason from all parties. There just aren’t as many reasonable republicans right now and it is only getting worse. The discussion on the upcoming Dem leaders is a hopeful one.
Completely agree, Celeste. And while I didn't want to detract from the hopeful vibe on this thread, I live in Maryland and see things from a different vantage point from others, even fellow Marylanders. It's true that Maryland is the bluest of blue states, and I come from a mid-sized university town, Ann Arbor, that is the bluest of blue cities. That doesn't mean everything in either place runs well or that they're more democratic (small 'd') than other places..although on both counts, yes, in some cases, they do and they are. Again, no damper intended, but I agree we need to be wary of too much 'groupthink', not exempting myself.
Yes. And we should not succumb to the idea that "America will never elect a woman, a mixed race woman, a gay man" etc. etc., which I hear to my discomfort more often than I'd like. It's a claim . . . a position . . . a theory I reject. The circumstances of the 2024 election were aberrant - and look how close Kamala Harris came to winning, despite the obstacles she faced. (There was no "mandate" - just the lie that there was. Big Lie, 2.0.) We are the party that nominated and elected the first Black president - twice, by substantial margins; that nominated the first female candidate, who won the popular vote, also by a substantial margin; and that supported Kamala Harris's candidacy in droves in spite of the peculiar circumstances of her nomination. Clearly America supports diversity, and the dearth of it on the dais at President Convicted Felon's inauguration, in his cabinet nominees and appointments, and among his followers tells us all we need to know. We have a deep, diverse, and talented bench of rising stars, Governor Moore among them.
And unfortunately, at this time, it's academic. We need to look to who we are going to promote and support for 2028, and we need to get an early start on it from the grassroots on up. It's time to start the long game.
Totes--and even better had she also been white. The sexism and racism rampant in this election were absolutely gobsmacking to me. I knew my state of residence would go heavily for the Orange Felon but the fact that more than 40% of the electorate in the blue-as-blue-can-be Kansas City metro actually stayed home rather than vote for Harris confounded me. We might have had a chance at beating Li'l Joshy Hawley had the Dems in Missouri stepped up and voted because Lucas Kunz lost by about the margin of Dems NOT VOTING. Not that Lucas was a particular gold ring: he refused to endorse Harris and his track record on some civil rights issues, especially having to do with LGBTQ folks, wasn't great. But even with those caveats (he has a sort of Susan Collins vibe in terms of party loyalty) he would have been a vast improvement over the Frat Boy, who would have been utterly humiliated had he lost.
Moore does have the male equipment required (apparently) for election in this country, and he has other tangible assets like youthful energy, a handsome appearance, intelligence, articulatness, a military background, diligence, honesty, and a growing record of achievement in the public interest, as highlighted in this piece.
Democrats shouldn’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Obama was elected and re-elected. Could Moore be as successful?
By next election I bet the electorate will have had enough of chaos and incompetence.
Yes we do, and it's our responsibility to spread the word about these qualified, YOUNG politicians who are dedicated to the law, our Constitution, and making life better for all Americans. After 2 years of the current lawless, cruel administration and the damage it is inflicting, Americans will be more than ready for an honest change, not the criminals we are saddled with now.
Just like last time, tRump controls each news cycle. The Dems have been all but invisible... We need them to come to the forefront and confront the stupidity and evil being imposed on our Country and the World. He can't jail all of us...
Yes. The Dem leadership (such as it is) has gone into hibernation. Maybe if they'd pulled some stupid stunt, like withholding approval for Senate hearings into prospective Cabinet appointees, they might have gotten a little more attention. Maybe it's time to start gumming up the works. Make Agent Orange flip out.
What can we do to have news we approve that will reach the people whose heads must be turned and whose minds must be opened to reality and what truly matters? Everyone needs to be aware of the good people, of the people we consider worthy candidates, and of how lives and country would be better with such official leaders. Too many news agencies and publications have been bought by the current majority party. How can we overcome that complication? How can we be absolutely certain we will have the elections for the next terms? We agree there are fine, qualified people of varied ages and backgrounds, and that we need to make everyone aware of these fine people. How can we make that happen and protect voting rights so voters can act wisely and make their choices count?
Maybe it starts by not being so ambitious. Those are serious goals you list, and I agree with every one. But it's overwhelming to look at them all at once, let alone make them happen yourself.
What we all CAN do, regardless of our relative power, is to use the accurate words for what's happening. It's like throwing a stone into a lake: it has ripples you cannot see. When you're talking to your family and friends, or even chatting with a stranger, use the correct words: like dictator, dictatorial edicts, temper tantrum, regime, bribing, lying, etc.. That's how we begin it.
Just heard on PBS news that the admin will let the social media reporters sit in the front at the White House news conferences. Legacy media will wane. They will be able to brainwash better over social media. So I guess that is the way media is going. Too bad, I like BBC and PBS , Reuters, etc.
Maybe the DNC could hire the Guys from The Lincoln Project and Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Roark to consult on messaging. I’ll bet Stacy Abrams has a thing or 2 to say.
Amen to that, Ms. Lyons. I am delighted to learn more about Governor Moore (with some personal pride as a U of MD grad); have been thinking that the time is now for the opposition to the current admin to get organized, identify key individuals and start the grass roots organization, similar to what Obama did in South Chicago. There are key individuals who know how to do this, if we encourage them to step forward. I love what Governor Moore is doing to/for MD. Thanks to the Contrarian for highlighting his tenure.
Oh believe me they’re there. They’re sending me texts for more money and I’m getting really annoyed. I know 2 years will come up on us quickly but how about, all of you in Congress, can give us a break
Governor Moore sounds like a real leader. And a courageous leader who lives and governs by his ethics, with attention to his heart. I’m grateful to read this article.
Thanks for highlighting the extraordinary leadership of Governor Moore. Gives hope when one sees the ineffectual doddering Schumer once again mouthing words in front of a lectern.
I'm not for age limits in congress, and most specifically the Senate, but I am for people to pay attention to who's running, and an end to rubber stamping the one who's "paid their dues".
I'm thinking of Diane Feinstein, chuck grassley, those who can't do the job and are simply clinging to power.
Be aware. All the qualifications demonstrated by Governor Moore will get the attention of the republican apparatus and bring upon him baseless attacks and defamation to kill his chances in their infancy as they are doing to Governor Newsom. Buckle up Governor 😄 and keep doing an excellent job.!!!
You can't be a smart, elected Dem and not know the smear campaigns that republicans will throw at you. I'm sure Newsom is ready, as are Whitmer and others.
Trumplicans will do this to ANY candidate that they see as an opposition to their modus operandi. Our candidates would do well to concentrate upon the problems and solutions that voters need to make their lives better. Speak of them loudly and often.
Is there a primary for this race? I don't want to put my finger on the scale if there is. Otherwise I'd be happy to donate (from Idaho, the reddest of the red).
As of right now it appears that Spanberger is the only Dem candidate who has declared. I have not heard of anyone else thinking about entering the race.
I would trade my governor (Braun), two senators (Banks and Young) and a Lt. Gov (Beckwith, who might actually be the worst of them all) for a Gov. Moore. I certainly hope he does consider running in 2028
I do not understand why Democrats are always so eager to encourage state Democratic leaders to focus on the presidency. Ignoring the state level is part of what got us into this mess (redistricting and gerrymandering), and opened up the real possibility that Republican controlled legislatures would interfere with the presidential certification. While I agree that Wes Moore is a good future presidential candidate, I would like him to continue to get Maryland sorted out in a subsequent term.
And we must write letters to our reps voicing our dissatisfaction with Trump’s chaotic and hateful tactics….. even if our senators snd reps are republicans…. All the more reason to shame them for rubber stamping.
Sadly, most are without shame. I recommend Brian Tyler Cohen's book, Shameless. Writing letters and phoning their offices can, however, have the impact of warning them that political expediency, especially if they receive a lot of opposition mail, might prompt them toward doing the right thing in some cases. One of my senators has, on occasion, done so, but sadly, not with his vote on Hegsith.
The Democrat's bench is very deep but, that was not enough. A large number of the polity are energized by hatred and quite willing to burn it all down rather than have competent leadership - alas.
We just elected a person of this caliber to the KS senate, his name is Patric Schmidt. He was a Naval Intelligence officer on the USS Regan. He worked in government in DC for a while until he realized how FU it is and decided to come home and run for office. I have an inside track, I went to HS with his mother. He hasn't had time to accomplish much yet and he's got a tough road as a democrat in a very red state. I have no doubt he will succeed. These are the people we need in government, not some orange turd who knows more about nothing than anyone else.
Governor Moore stated he cannot understand the rationale for the January 6 commutations and pardons. That is because he is an honorable man, a veteran who took seriously his oaths to defend the country and the Constitution, and a more than decent person. He dare not speak the real reason, however. The Felon-in-Chief who pardoned them is a criminal thug who thought it useful to free a small militia of armed loonies and lowlifes answerable only to HIM. Never know when they might come in useful again.
Trump is nothing but a cheap thug who thinks and acts like a cheap thug. Vengeance, pettiness, hamberders and promoting himself 24/7 are his priorities, not ours. A violent, brutal, sadistic man who once employed grotesque violence before will not hesitate to do so again should he think it useful. When people tell you who they are the first time....well, we all know how that ends.
I live in MD and I can attest to Governor Moore’s excellence and approachability. Shortly after he won the election, I was at my grandson‘s soccer game. My son saw Governor Moore went over to him and thanked him for running for governor and said I voted for you and Gov Moore shook his hand and he was warm and kind and it was a great moment. I’ll never forget it

Did you fail to notice the energy Kamala Harris brought to a campaign that actually wasn't going anywhere until she became the nominee?
I noticed the energy. I also noticed, with great sorrow and disgust, that more people voted for a demented, decrepit felon than for her.
Did they? One wonders.
gerrymandering and voter suppression, and too many people failing to vote is what put a traitor into the White House.
We need many of the qualities of our recent President Joe Biden as well. Why is it that many people refuse to recognize some fine people whose actions are strong and highly beneficial but have only subtle projections announcing deserved credit? JPFM, there are three little dots to the right of where you make your comments. Click on the dots, and voila: the edit function appears!
You don't have to be ruled by that stupid autocorrecting thing.
Let them twist THOSE words! lol
Simply tragic.
I’ll add former NC Governor Roy Cooper and newly elect AG Jeff Jackson.
Add Cory Booker
Add Adam Kinzinger.
Kinzinger is not a Democrat. I've seen no reporting that he changed party.
You never know. Stay tuned ….
We can embrace his support/views against MAGA, authoritarianism and Trump. But he is still a very conservative Republican with a christonationalist bent. Accept his good deeds but he should never be 'added to our list' until his conversion from the dark side is complete. Ditto for Cheney.
Remember… inclusivity!
He's still man with respect for the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, & the rule of law. We need more like him.
I agree. However I do not think he should be 'added to the list' of potential Dem candidates in future elections (if we have any). That was what I was replying to.

Well said!
Sadly most of them are not white straight Christian men that the moron nazi voters would give a chance to...
I think Kamala would have won if she had been a guy.
Harris was not elected for two (2) reasons: gender, and race!
She was more capable than any former candidate! Add it up!
54% of women voted for Felon Trump! White men voted in a large percentage, too, for the felon!
Two women have been defeated by Trump, and zero men. We Dems need to learn that our country is not ready for a woman as president.
I agree
And unfortunately, at this time, it's academic. We need to look to who we are going to promote and support for 2028, and we need to get an early start on it from the grassroots on up. It's time to start the long game.

Please do not confuse those who call themselves Christian (nationalists) with true Christians. Example Bishop Budde.

Yes, terrific news regarding Gov Moore!
Even nicer living in his State of Maryland!
I was born there, 65 years ago in Takoma Park. Now I’m happy to have Josh Stein as Governor of my new state, North Carolina!
Thanks for highlighting the extraordinary leadership of Governor Moore. Gives hope when one sees the ineffectual doddering Schumer once again mouthing words in front of a lectern.

And you forgot the Orange Thug?
I have other thoughts on his fate
Wes Moore, wish we had more like him and very much on the WATCH list for future, if we can just get there.
Be aware. All the qualifications demonstrated by Governor Moore will get the attention of the republican apparatus and bring upon him baseless attacks and defamation to kill his chances in their infancy as they are doing to Governor Newsom. Buckle up Governor 😄 and keep doing an excellent job.!!!

My governor! Nuff said
I am so jealous! As a Virginia resident I have had enough of my MAGA governor red vest. Ready to elect a Democratic woman in Abigail Spanberger.
Moore would be a great candidate for president and a great president.
Go Spanberger!
As a native Virginian- but current Floridian (if only I could get out of here!)- I’m rooting for you! Keep VA blue!!
I've already started donating to her campaign. Let's go, Spanberger!
Bobby Scott has said he's considering it
I would trade my governor (Braun), two senators (Banks and Young) and a Lt.

Pamela, Move to Maryland, arguably the bluest state in the Union
And you’ve got a great art museum in Baltimore!
Mary, several actually
And beautiful beaches and a lovely Chesapeake Bay.
And a great Aquarium and Train museum!
I wish that was possible - maybe someday
Attagirl Jen! Love to see more young vibrant democrats like Gov. Moore getting exposure.
Contrast the intelligence, character and ethics of Gov. Moore and the disgusting character of the new Secretary of Defense. No need to say more.
Gloria, they are from different planets...
Wonderful article! It feels good to know there are people like Governor Moore who is providing positive leadership for his state!
Positive leadership for his state and an example for the nation Teresa 👏
I hope Governor Moore would be one of the leading contender together with Governor Newsom in the next presidential election. If we get one at all.
A ray of hope mixed with heavy doses of sanity and decency.
Thanks for highlighting this governor. And reminding us all that our country has capable leaders.
The Democrat's bench is very deep but, that was not enough. A large number of the polity are energized by hatred and quite willing to burn it all down rather than have competent leadership - alas.
