TikTok is something that younger generations from millennials on down have taken to - and I’m sure they enjoy it and don’t want to see it go - but the legislation was not to silence everybody on TikTok, but rather to get rid of the hidden data tracking that goes back to the communist Chinese government
The option is out there for somebody who isn’t associated with China to buy TikTok, but the Chinese have chosen not to take that option - passing up the possibility of billions of dollars by selling it - because they don’t want people to see the data mining that they have embedded in it
Feisbuk and Instagram and Xitter and all the other domestic media have been doing the same data tracking themselves right from the onset. This whole argument is more like a disagreement between the media whales over who has the rights to the data their app gathers on its users. That those same media whales also want their algorithms in a TikTok app is another piece to it. They're quite willing to legislate to regain messaging control.
if you really think that this is about money, then you are an idiot - it’s about data from US citizens going to a communist Chinese government who is the greatest risk to our country
China claims to be communist, but they're just another autocracy among many. They're actually about as genuinely communist as Mussolini's Italy. Meanwhile, the whales do as they wish and sell to Anybody and Everybody, regardless of ideology and whether or not they're friendly to the US.
Is propaganda promoted within TikTok? YES
Is propaganda also promoted within Feisbuk? YES.
Which devil is worse? (They're both devils after all.).
China is something new. It's not quite Communist or an oligarchy. It's something new, IMO. It's "becoming" a hybrid of some kind. I don't want TikTok here at all, though. Much like Russia, everything connected to them is dual use for intelligence.
Disagree. I spent time in Hangzhou in 2014 finishing a doctorate, and while an amazing country in so many ways, it's definitely a police state. Here in the US, if you criticize or protest against the government or governmental policies, the suits just ignore you. Or maybe belittle you. Over there, you and sometimes your entire family are dispossessed and sent off to a re-education camp.
Tik Tok's newsfeed and search algorithms are the real problem, because they actively reflect Chinese Communist Party dictums to suppress stories that embarrass the Party, like Tiananmen Square, the oppression of the Uighyurs, etc; and amplify feel-good stories that make China and the party look good. As such, Tik Tok--while otherwise a fun and useful app--is a mouthpiece for state mis-/dis-information. Forcing the sale will allow Tik Tok to survive, just without the pro-CCP propaganda.
According to the Journal of Democracy, TikTok allows the Chinese government to gather data on our population that they can use against us if we have an armed conflict with them. Since there has not been a ground war in the US for a long time, Americans are unused to thinking of the military implications of things. Presumably in a war we can control domestic companies, which we cannot do that of our enemies.
Working in Communications for nearly 30 years, I was on TT for quite some time, both for business and personal. I learned more about Excel, cooking, science, etc. than on any other platforms combined. If you're online in any way, shape, or form right now, your data is being mined. On top of that, we don't even learn about hacks until months later. The whole thing with TT is performative at best. Our government is so far behind in protecting us technologically, we will never catch up. Had they implemented GDPR (which none of our electeds would allow because INVESTING) when Europe did, we would be in an entirely different place.
Well, TikTok or Instagram, or twitter/ X has no information on me because I never got on them - and I was able to find resources for things I needed for work or personal advancement without any of that information going to the Chinese government
So, as you say the Chinese government has passed up on making money off of it, because they are using the data of all platforms that they have control over to enhance among other things their military preparedness. We already are less safe because of the ability or Russian, Chinese and other nefarious players Bot accounts that are influencing our population. So, for the collective good of our national security, and democracy there is a reason to start getting control over data. We can assume that if American companies use methods that defy our national security, we can try these people for treason if we go to war with another country and they sell them our data. This is one of the reasons to probably block X as well, or force a sale, because Elon Musk is ignoring following our laws, and that makes him a danger to our democracy too.
Well said - the Muskrat has discussed stuff directly with Putin since he is not an official of the government - he is NAZI who shares Trump‘s affection for other authoritarian psychopaths, and golfers size of their dicks
For heavens sake. You know *why* it’s being banned, don’t you? It’s not some anti-youth vendetta. If TikTok hadn’t been invaluable to Americans it would have been a piss poor way to spread disinformation among us. I doubt anyone claims it’s “all bad” but it’s also an instrument of the Chinese gov’t. Choose your poison.
Maybe it is and maybe it’s not what you claim. I think it is glib to suggest selling their company to an American competitor under duress would be something ByteDance would willingly do. In any event, there is great value in TikTok to American users that likely would suffer if dropped into the hands of the gang of three US social media billionaires. That value being the opportunity to receive information from around the world not filtered through US news media and social media disinformation apparatus.
Sorry but this is naive. It’s filtered through AND altered by the CCP. They control the messages we get. To see it as the last bastion of liberty is ridiculous. I don’t disagree with the negative impact of billionaire owners of US social media, but seeing China as the defender of freedom and the US as the abuser is just dumb. What it tells me is that Chinese propaganda is working as it was intended.
Thank you. Arguing that some good information emerges misses the point, which is that that good information is necessary to instill trust in a platform that is inherently untrustworthy (like all social media, but TikTok is specifically egregious in the ways you've laid out).
I understand you are knowledgeable and have access to much more information than I. At the same time, that I do not and cannot know more about TikTok is due, at least in part, to the secrecy of my own government. You assert a threat, but there is no way for me or for most of us to verify any of what you seem so sure of. I used TT in the past and I found it to offer information that is not rigorously filtered by US media. I like having sources of information not tainted by my own country’s point of view. We will see in a minute if ByteDance chooses to sell the thing; I just can’t, for the life of me, understand why they would. This is the part of the deal that doesn’t add up for me. Is it possible for you to share more evidence of the Chinese filtering of the information that I thought I was receiving firsthand from TT creators across the globe? Because not everyone in Congress voted for this law, and some of the voices I look to for leadership voted against the bill. Thank you.
If I have more knowledge than you it’s because I dig for it and read and don!t despise the opinions of experts. A little world history will tell you what China is up to here. A little understanding of how power works will help you understand what’s going on. Absent that context I guess you can tell yourself a fairy tale where China is a hero who cares about the free flow of information and the US, as it is today, anyway, is denying all your rights, but it’s just that as a fairy tale. You are admitting to not knowing much but drawing conclusions on the fumes of your feelings and what you are told by a tainted source that has a massive stake in you hating your own gov’t. I have to tell you that you should be doing better than that. Educate yourself about how the world really works — not by simmering in the bowels of the internet but by studying real world history and political science. Then see how the world looks.
I hate to see people say “You know a lot more than I do but I think….” Shame on you! There is no secret info out there (at least there is, but you don’t need national security intel to know what’s going on. It’s going on right before our eyes!! Learn all you can — not exclusively from the internet and only in small amounts from social media. Curate your information sources. It’s liberating and you will still feel angry and powerless because these are perilous times we live in, but at least you’ll be afraid of the things that are genuine threats.
The truth is that TikTok is the most popular social app that the billionaire oligarchs cannot control. Therefore, it must be sold to a billionaire or banned.
If you don't believe Tic Tok is a primary source of disinformation check out what happened in Romania. 20,000 videos planted by the Russian government that completely disrupted the election for president. Crying fire in a crowded theater isn't free speech, it's a form of terrorism.
I’m commenting less to argue about whether TikTok should be banned or not than to thank you for introducing the platform to me. I’m 68, and because I try (mostly without succeeding,) to avoid social media, I had no idea about the positive aspects of TikTok. I’m sure this is a naive question, but can’t creators just move to a different platform like Bluesky? Again, as you can tell I’m pretty technologically ignorant so folks, have mercy on me😉
Think about how you would feel if the government took a wrecking ball to your house and said, "You can build a house somewhere else."
Yes, you can, and you will build somewhere else. But who's to say that another wrecking ball won't visit you again?
I realize I've built a strawman, but I feel it's appropriate. The truth is that the government has not cited one single case where the Chinese government interfered in any way with our lives through TikTok. They cannot even show where the Chinese government has collected any data. And they certainly haven't proved that TikTok is a propaganda dissemination machine. It leads folks like me (a Democrat who ran for office last November) to be highly suspicious of politicians in both parties. They're not being honest about their true motivation. And I worry that this is just the beginning of a drive that will end in an environment where the only information we get is through state-run media.
You know we have a lot of agencies in the government that probably have this information, but they’re not gonna share it with the general public - have you ever heard of the Manhattan Project? - Yeah they didn’t let people like you know about that either back then
Ever since Grover Norquist said he'd like to shrink the government down so it could be drowned in a bathtub, there has been a concerted and intentional effort by conservatives to undermine trust in our government. Now they're saying, "Trust us!"
There is nothing else out there like TT. Each platform has its own nuances and communities. People have built careers on social media, which I warned about 15 years ago. But to say it's a first amendment case is wrong. They're not taking away people's ability to communicate, just one platform to do it. This is a great article about it. https://www.thenation.com/article/society/tiktok-terrible-day-supreme-court/
TikTok. as well as other social media sites, poses the risk of offering up opinion masquerading as fact. It affords people the opportunity to avoid the heavy lifting of sifting though information in the public realm and ultimately coming to their own conclusions. Consequently, the decline of critical thinking and the reliance on so-called influencers as the basis for decision making is a minefield which will have to be navigated in the years to come unless many have an epiphany.
As a TikTok user, no content creation, I will be sad to see it go. Sad, and a little bitter. The United States government has done nothing to really improve user’s rights and privacy from exploitation and the majority comes from American companies. TikTok gets dismissed as just dance videos, but I’ve learned so much from creators advocating for better urban and transportation planning, teaching history and providing context to current events, illuminating social issues (such as Jessica Valenti's Abortion Every Day). Am I concerned that the Chinese government knows how long I watch certain videos, what I liked or not. No. At least not anymore than I worry about the oligarchs of America knowing. I do absolutely believe that fear mongering led to this decision and the tech oligarchs were largely responsible. I’m a little older than the anticipated user, as Gen X. I do see downsides to the ban. The algorithm is quite amazing, and if you get shitty content, that may be reflective of what you’ve watched.
I like reading these stories! It feels like the Contrarian is starting out with a heavy reliance on video presentation. And that’s fine, I suppose, but I typically come over to SubStack to read. I’m hoping there are plans to make these video interviews accessible, that is, available via text transcripts. Thanks.
The interview of Jonathan Greenblatt by Rubin has a button for Transcript. I haven't checked others but expect it's the same. Like you, I'm more oriented to reading than to watching videos though it's good, for me at least, to see the faces of the individuals involved.
I finally had an opportunity to listen to the Goldblatt interview, and there is no sign of a transcript button for my version of the app. Thanks for your support.
I wonder if it has to do with using the app? I don't download apps to read or watch anything - don't understand how it helps and find good old fashioned (lol) direct website access works fine for me.
Honestly, I would be happy if all social media died and disappeared. I say this as a 28 year old social media user. It is a toxic place and is to blame for the rise of misinformation.
What's unique about TikTok that couldn't be replicated by another company? This hardly seems revolutionary to me. I don't use TikTok but it can be duplicated.
I think a lot of people need to get away from social media and out into the world a bit. The pandemic is over.
The law passed by Congress does not close down TikTok. ByteDance could see the right to operate in the US to a company not controlled by China. TikTok is worth more than $100 billion. Rather than sell, ByteDance has announced it will close TikTok. It has been reported that TikTok's data mining algorithm would definitely not be sold. One has to wonder if the Chinese government is behind that decision.
Just as Washington Post and other journalists have launched Contrarian, the media influencers on TikTok could jointly form a new social media platform.
The Washington Post did not form contrarian - one of their most read and respected journalist Jennifer Rubin decided to leave the Washington Post and start her own (along with a partner) site on Substack without interference from management or billionaire owners

Who besides TikTok has their data going to a communist, Chinese government?
The issue is who's paying for it, not who gets to have it. Never doubt that the media whales sell to the highest bidder regardless of their ideology.
But if China's harvesting their own metadata that's business competition and money the other whales aren't making!
My last post on this issue -
if you really think that this is about money, then you are an idiot - it’s about data from US citizens going to a communist Chinese government who is the greatest risk to our country

You’ve completely missed the point. Substack isn’t a great platform either.
Part of taking this down is to protect us from a potential future military conflict with China. See this article in the Journal of Democracy on Why TikTok is a Threat to Democracy. https://www.journalofdemocracy.org/online-exclusive/why-tiktok-is-a-threat-to-democracy/
So, as you say the Chinese government has passed up on making money off of it, because they are using the data of all platforms that they have control over to enhance among other things their military preparedness. Why is the Logan Act never in 'action' for private citizens like muskrat when he is talking to putin or other heads of states?
You are so right to be concerned about the Chinese government spying on us and learning about:
- The latest breakdance moves
- The wild adventures of Maxwell the cat
- Talking parrots
- People posing as statues who startle unsuspecting strangers for laughs
- Water bottles tied to ceiling fans hitting blindfolded people in the head
- Mobile treadmills rolling through Central Park
- How Zuckerberg collects tons of personal data and sells it to the highest bidder
- Three guys in a duck-blind telling hilarious dad jokes
- How to build a rocket with diet Coke and Mentos
A great example of disinformation

The truth is that TikTok is the most popular social app that the billionaire oligarchs cannot control. Therefore, it must be sold to a billionaire or banned.
TikTok was designed to be addictive and to harvest data that can be accessed by the Chinese government.
It's polluted by trad wives and other pernicious influencers and scammers.
If you don't believe Tic Tok is a primary source of disinformation check out what happened in Romania. 20,000 videos planted by the Russian government that completely disrupted the election for president. Crying fire in a crowded theater isn't free speech, it's a form of terrorism.

Undoubtedly.

Yes, they can move. I suppose it would take time to build a following on a separate platform and they don't want to do that.
Yes. It would definitely be hard to start over.

As someone who’s very hard of hearing, even with aids, I share your hope.
a con man has to be charming, a spy has to be subtle

To be clear, it's not the Washington Post which launched The Contrarian, it's WaPo writers and others who have quit the Washington Post.
It was bad grammar on my part. I should have written “journalists from the Washington Post and other news organizations launched contrarian”
I know. I used poor grammar. Should have said "journalists from Washington Post and other news organizations formed Contrarian"
The Washington Post did not form contrarian - one of their most read and respected journalist Jennifer Rubin decided to leave the Washington Post and start her own (along with a partner) site on Substack without interference from management or billionaire owners
I know - poor grammar I should have said "Journalists who resigned from the Washington Post and other journalists formed Contrarian"
There are better ways for these people to share ideas than video sites that are ripe for nefarious exploitation.
Would really appreciate transcripts.
Look for a transcript button below other videos - except for these three shorts.
it's big brother only people like it.........
