The game, the team are fantastic. But it is Kerr who represents, for me, all that a great player, a great coach, a great man, and a great citizen can and should be.
I've only been watching pro basketball for a decade and was surprised to see there are Steph fans in every stadium. When the Warriors go on the road the audience cheers when he sinks a three pointer and groans if he misses. He plays with joy and shares the love! He's got a fun shimmy he does when he's cookin'! And I'm happy when Steph's happy! :D
Love this. As a longtime Warriors fan, the current core has been great on the court and in the community. They may play in organized chaos, but they epitomize selflessness and team play. And if a player doesn’t buy into that culture they won’t last long, no matter how good a basketball player they are. Watching the Warriors on the court and in the community is joyful for fans. Go Dubs!
Thanks for this column! I have been living in the SF Bay area for the Warriors championship ride and it has been amazing. They joy with which Steph Curry plays makes it even better.
I've been watching the NBA since the late 1970s when the Portland Trail Blazers won the NBA championship in 1977. I absolutely hate how the 3-point shot has taken over the game of basketball and now the game is predictable. I watched how (I'm sure in his mind but wouldn't say publicly) Damian Lillard tried to best Steph Curry as the NBA 3-point king over the seasons. Much fan debate in Portland during the Lillard years on who was the better 3-point shooter: Lillard or Curry? But enough of my griping about the 3-point shot.
I love how the NBA is politically involved in social justice/civil rights/pro-democracy. The activism tends to turn off some of those who lean politically right including a local sports radio host that I listen to. They will claim sports and activism don't mix. Keep it separate. But I disagree. All the more power to the Warriors and the rest of the NBA in doing what is right and moral. 🏀
We were just taking about the joy Steph Curry shows on the court. It creates joy in others. His integrity and participation in the community also inspires the same in others. A remarkable man.
I'd like to see more coaches and players like the Bulls' very own Steve Kerr and to take it back further, Chicago's Bob Love. MJ and Pippen had egos get in the way of helping others. John Paxson understood the memo too.
Warriors fan here. It's great to see the organization give attention to not only their quest for another championship, but to matters that are dear to their players, coaches, and staff.
I've been a Warriors fan since the We Believe Era in 2007 so I was fortunate to see Steph Curry beginning in his rookie 2009 season By that spring I was telling a friend that he reminded me of the Yankee's Derek Jeter...he had that "it" quality, that winning gene He and Steve Kerr are two of the finest people around, on every level, not "just" basketball And watching them especially this year has been a balm to my spirit, even as they face a tough game 7 tomorrow in Houston Go Dubs and thank you for this piece!
Warriors, is this the round ball? Are there any politicians who came out of this? Why not? O contraire. Is our country taking care of them or are they taking care of our country. Just dribbling. You can’t even blame brain damage on these athletes. Why don’t they do something? Are they orange?
I love Stephen Curry. Not only as a fantastic basketball player, but also as a great person and a great family man.
Another Warriors fan here. Thanks for your detailed & lovely article here on Coffee With The Contrarians.

Ah, yes. The Warriors fans certainly come out in droves to the game when they come to Portland. Yellow jerseys everywhere.

Excellent writing! Amazing! Captivating!

Ugh. Signed graduate of CSUEB.
I'm not much of a sports fan--unless it's my grandchildren playing-- but I love this!
Yes basketball can be a comforting distraction. I hope the Warriors get to the finals so the Celtics can beat them in four games.
