Last night MSNBC showed several Republican House members validating complaints about Trump/Putin and Musk. Those are the folks we need.

22 Republican senators, dozens of Republican House members voted to fund Ukraine. Many of them call Trump a liar about Putin.

Get those Republicans who oppose Putin on the record!

Indeed, the only reasonable hope for a solution is for some Republican congress members to publicly declare that they have had enough, and to make common cause with the Democrats.

In addition to what's already been said, Hope, I'm believing if it comes down to it, enough people will act like they did during the Great Depression: neighbors putting furniture back in neighbors' houses before the sheriff could finish removing them.

Nor am I issuing brave talk from a distance. I'm expecting Social Security, had a letter from them last week, and we're facing imminent rent hikes through no fault of our young landlord, who we know personally. We're armed with our faith and prepared to go to the mat - including but not limited to some of the suggestions above, if my expectation is not met.

I take some comfort in the size of the problem. (I'm on Social Security also but got my check second Wednesday--have been paying in for over 50 years but I share your dread and fear). The United States is chock full of SS and Medicare recipients, however. We are not alone.

I also think that what was THEIR Proud Boys will become OUR Proud Boys just as soon as they realize that their own relatives' Medicare and Social Security are disappearing.

Also, a huge number of recipients of both programs are veterans, aka: ex-military, some from the 60's revolutionary times and Vietnam era who love Dylan and who don't much like to be lied to. These are not exactly shrinking violet kinds of people. Take what you will from that. But I think it might present a pretty good-sized wall for them to get over. In any case, funny how so many Telsas are being burned to the ground.

A Newsweek article/headline this morning said that Musk is "shocked" that so many people hate him, e.g., burning up Telsas. Is he delusional or just in a very big bubble.

The answer is yes to both of your questions!

Indeed, both. But about the bubble part: could it really be that Musk has been riding around in a MAGA bubble that HE THINKS is all of reality? and that no one would be just a little perturbed (as in seriously PISSED OFF) at having our trust abused and our lives turned upside down? So THAT's the delusional part. So yes, both.

If he has been in such a bubble, as you described, what a comeuppance of realization he will have if he’s able to come out of it.

It is hard to imagine that anybody could live in a bubble, such as that, but it is hard to imagine being wealthy and anybody not being aware of lives of other people. I do not understand how any such person could exist. C C: I don't see these as mutually exclusive descriptions. So, I am far from being kind. Musk however is just like the rest of us--insofar as we are all humanly complex characters. That said, if he really is "shocked" at the hate-Musk thing (and I don't claim to know), that says to me that he is quite immature and less reflectively self-aware than most give him credit for. My sense of it is that he IS a liar and quite thoughtless and uncaring of how he is destroying others' lives--but there are variations of how that condition comes about in adults. There is a lack of development as performative, and there is a completely conscious endorsement of one's degeneration of character. It's just not the same thing.

The Constitutional Crisis has been upon us, Ms. Rubin, for at least the past ten years. It has been upon us since Donald Trump made his descent on a Trump Tower gilded elevator on that awful day in 2015 when he declared he was running for president. It's been upon us since Day One of his first term when he attempted to prevent visitors from certain select countries he "didn't like" from entering the United States. It's been upon us since Trump called the president of Ukraine, seeking to dig up dirt on Joe Biden; it's been upon us since he tried to coerce Georgia's election commissioner to "find 11,000 votes" to overturn Biden's 2020 electoral victory in that state. It's been upon us during both his impeachments. It's been upon us since January 6th, 2021, when he urged his thuggish followers to attack the Capitol; it's been upon us since he was charged with crimes and convicted of many of them. It's been upon us since the cowardly Supreme Court handed him what amounted to monarchical immunity from criminal prosecution. And on and on and on.

Donald Trump's middle name is "Constitutional Crisis." He's a pox on this nation, on this world and on the very concept and ideals of democracy.

Then, when they started getting a flood of angry calls and letters he actually responded! Of course it was all lies and deflection. But, they get the calls and letters and it does affect them.

Keep contacting your Senators and Congress representatives. Phone numbers are easily found online for local offices and DC offices, and mailing addresses are listed, as well as contact forms, and sometimes you can find an email address too.

I contacted my democratic senators too, they need to know how we feel and to help push them into action.

Stay strong.

I guess the nickname Little Marco Rubio is fitting because his tweet is how I would expect a fifth grader to respond. A disgraceful reaction.

It is my hope that someone creates a nationwide database that shows all protests, past and future. Or as many of them as possible. To have a graphic with a growing number of dots on the map, each one marking a protest past or future would be greatly empowering to us, and it would really get under Trump’s skin. This could let us all know that our local event is an integral part of a larger whole. Which I hope would inspire more and larger events.

I’ve posted a comment similar to this on another substack in the hopes that someone might know who/what organization is well positioned to build this.

I realize the difficulty of getting information about protests all over the country. Yea, it will be a bunch of work. I happen to think it would be worth it.

To use an economics phrase, I really believe the market will demand it. And soon. Hopefully soon enough.

I don't know if they have the staffing or $$$ to launch AND sustain such an undertaking, but PFAW (People For the American Way) might be a good place to query. Or could this be engineered by some enthusiastic and techno-knowledgeable young adults on a popular social media site? I, closing in on my 8th decade, and with arthritic and clumsy fingers, would not possess the skills or knowledge needed to undertake such a database, but I believe your idea has real (and potentially consequential) merit.

And...I'm right there with you on the approach of my 8th decade.

So very glad to be receiving your columns. I just wish they could receive wider readership because I fear that if your columns are limited to Substack, you are preaching to the choir.

I shared your concern about Substack, at first. This was before Jen left the Post. Lately I've lost much of my concern about preaching to the choir. Seen SO MUCH encouraging news lately, even as times grow darker by the hour.

Saw a headline about the pino's mind slipping, but his grip remaining strong. Myself, I didn't even bother reading the article, just said "BS", out loud, and kept spreading the word. Online (or whatever the right phrase is), at least for now, but breaking out of that bubble. But the real safety in numbers is fast outpacing my initial, but still real, concern about that choir you mention.

Wayne, thank you for mentioning, having found sub sack before Jen left the Post. It is only because she left it, but I searched for her to find out where she was. In doing that, I found sub stack for the very first time, and I am so grateful! Obviously, I was not as aware as some of you are, but better late than never, and what a magnificent help!

That thought about preaching to the choir has occurred to me about all of these substances who are hoping for the same things to save our country. Still I am so grateful to have these, for Jen’s and Norm‘s messages, for some other substacks, for all the Goodwill and comments, and for no way that I am not alone in my hopes, prayers, simple actions, and thoughts. Thank you!

Like a lot of Americans, I live out in the boonies. I have yet to find a protest near me. There are sites claiming to do so, but so far they report something in Atlanta (3.5 hours away) or for Tesla protests say my IP Address is in Croatia... I'll keep trying. Spread this widely, Please!

Why not organize your own protest? A few people can have an enormous impact, as they inspire others. I just had buttons made saying, “VETERANS DESERVE BETTER”. We’ all need to do something. Also makes one feel better in this horrific environment. Good Luck.

You can call the offices of your Senator and congress representative. Their local and DC office numbers are listed online.

You can find contact forms online to send them messages. Just type in 'contact' and their name.

They may not respond but they do feel the pressure when we all are contacting them, often.

I get a newsletter from my congressman and i just hit reply and give him my opinion, i never was sure if it ever got thru. I have been doing that for years to my maga congressman, never got a response. But suddenly after all the gop were being flooded with angry calls and letters my congressman responded to my contact. So it just shows they get the letters and calls and they feel the pressure when we all act.

Even democratic representatives should be contacted to know how we feel and to push them into action or to know that we have their backs when they do act.

Stay strong.

So far, the nearest protests for me are about the same distance away. With my health issues, if I drove that far I wouldn't be able to protest. 😠 😔

Musk and his sidekick are actually LOSING a lot of battles right now.

On top a rebuke from the Chief Justice, the mealy-mouthed, 3-year-old felon dribbled out something to the effect that Roberts didn't "name him" -- a silly rejoinder, but one carrying the shock of being rebuked. But another District Judge for Maryland ordered USAID's operations to be restored in part, ordering DOGE to submit a plan to him to let the agency's employees back in their offices, barred Elon Musk from having anything to do with the plan, adding that he violated the Constitution by usurping Congress' authority to decide which laws to keep, and which to jettison. It was a victory for Norm Eisen, who headed the suit brought by USAID employees.

Then District Judge Ana Reyes overruled Pete Hegseth's expulsion of transgender troops from the military, issuing an immediate injunction, adding that "[military] law does not demand that the Court rubber-stamp illogical judgments based on conjecture." And in Wisconsin, an ethics complaint was filed against one of Elon Musk's shadow groups for failing to disclose its advocacy spending as required by law.

There are others as well, less dramatic, and some focused on states. Democrats are winning small, but important by-elections, and both Elise Stefanik's and Matt Gaetz's seats in Congress are vulnerable, The deportations of Venezuelans based on the Alien and Sedition Acts of 1798 is going to the Supreme Court, where Justice Roberts is now likely to throw cold water at it, given the obvious -- Congress has not declared war on Venezuela.

Whether all of this represents momentum is hard to say, but courts are fighting back. People are organizing every day, and disgust throughout the land is rising. While Lindsey Graham is getting drunk and pretending he's not a slithering wormtongue, lots of us have been busy.

Keep up the good work, people!

As a lay person, both intelligent and ignorant, I believe we were in a constitutional crisis when the Supreme Court purposely delayed the immunity decision when Jack Smith made the request of the court and months later gave the Presidency criminal immunity. Thereby, shutting down all Trumps court cases for varying reasons.
