I love this new TChump insult: “Criticism of President in Name Only (PINO) Trump and acting president Elon Musk has become more frequent and bipartisan.”

I love it too. It will be my new goto name for him. But how do we pronounce it? The way he says “Rino”? Or more like pee-no, as in that Russian tape?

"Pino" is the Spanish word for "pine," so that's how I heard it the first time I saw it: with the long "i" common in Romance languages. Now I'm wondering why RINO is pronounced the way it is -- because it looks like "rhino"? DINO doesn't come up nearly as often (think Joe Manchin), but I'd probably pronounce it like the name, not like the first part of "dinosaur" (which also makes me think of Joe Manchin).

I hope so too, but having grown up in a 50s GOP family who voted with my White, all Christian NJ suburb for Barry Goldwater, hated the 30 Democrats out of 2000 voters, one of whom (a Quacker) introduced me to the Civil Rights, before I became a Democrat in 1968, before college, because of the anti-Vietnam protests, I do not have much faith in the GOP to ever be the party of Lincoln again. Rabid, racist anti-communism turned Eisenhower moderate Republicans like my mother (who had a draft age son) into Democrats by 1973, but my Father, hating the draft despite his WW service, still bought the “trickle down” falacies until the GOP went full anti-LGFTQ and Puritan.

Republicans did not realize how many of the poor live in red states and are MAGA voters. There is a gulf between the insanely rich MAGAs and want to be insanely rich MAGAs, and the MAGAs at the bottom who are now about to be hurt. That's why Steve Bannon cautioned about Medicaid cuts.

"The house republicans last night narrowly passed a bill that will hurt the poor to benefit the rich."

Republicans want to make the tax cuts passed in Trump's first term permanent because they expire this year. Democrats are just fine with letting them expire without taking a vote. Then they can claim that taxes were raised under Republican leadership. So Republicans (rightly) are going to force Democrats to vote on whether or not they want to make tax cuts permanent. Good for the Republicans.

No, he is not a fading PINO. There are threats of a third term and now someone has floated the idea of him imposing martial law to keep him in office. Please do not delude yourself on this and, above all, do not underestimate his utter ruthlessness.

Expand full comment

I for one, do not have the luxury of deluding myself into underestimating the PINO and Musk, and I don't think the writer is, either. However, any advantage, I - again, for one - will press to it's maximum. I'm not afraid of the illegitimate president's threats of attempting a third term, or of martial law, and in the time in between like I said, this is one citizen who will press every last square inch of social, political, and spiritual space until it becomes two square inches, or one square mile into two.

I could go on, and apologies if this response is either discouraging or too long winded. But while I don't underestimate the un-dynamic duo, I refuse to overestimate them either, or give them one fraction of a millimeter more than they have already, illegally grabbed.

Expand full comment

Agreed! Forewarned is forearmed. We have time to attack Trump's plan to be a king. Organically, voters in the heartland are shouting "No Kings!" So, we have the tools we need to shut down him refusing to leave office. Americans are not on board with this.

There is no reason for us to accept Trump's framing that resistance to him is futile. It is most certainly not futile. Remember, this guy lies.

Expand full comment

AGREED! 💯!!

For us Star Trek fans, they had it right, telling the Borg: NO, resistance is not futile, and proved it. Resistance members in WW II Europe, Spain under Franco, and South America, continuing today, have survived and even thrived. Aleksandr Solzhenytsin stood out and outlived Stalin and his successors. Are we really going to act like full fledged fascism is here when it isn't (yet)?

I'm not saying it's wrong to admit fear. It isn’t. But, was it the generation before this one (? - I'm losing track). That said "if you're scared, just say you're scared." Just don't bring your fear to the front lines and discourage others. Help out in some other way if you can.

And as I always like to say, reminding myself, I'm not talking from a pedestal. I'm not immune from fear. But if I am there at any time, I'm still gonna find some way to help out.

I am so anxious with my federal employee neighbors losing their jobs, my brother losing his healthcare, SNAP and SSI benefits. While these guys dick around and think about possibly standing up to these tyrants, people are already suffering. I try to read stories of pushback, backlash and lawsuits to settle my nerves. But I am generally afraid.

Expand full comment

Completely understandable. Myself, I fairly live for these accounts of pushback, and I strongly prefer the word 'resistance', no disrespect to actual registers under past and present tyrannical.

My take is this: those of us not directly affected (yet) should press our advantage each and every time - the intention being for the "us" to mean all of us in the opposition, directly affected or less directly.

I wish I could offer more than mere words of encouragement, and something more tangible, and that opportunity may come. But for now, this us my offering. We (all of us!) need to know that we are far from alone, even though in this increasingly digital, isolated age, every evidence may suggest otherwise.

Hope this helps, even a little bit.

Donald Trump, our con-artist, criminal, monarchical president is collapsing the Great American Empire. Some citizens are already suffering from his attack on the administrative state. All Americans will soon suffer from his attack on agencies that protect our money, keep us safe and build our national wealth. Quite an accomplishment in just 6 weeks. Why? Trump loves money more than anything else and certainly more than he loves America. With loyalist control at the Justice Department, FBI and the DOD, Trump, WILL loot the Treasury through tax cuts and misappropriated funds. He will use his trade policies to cut every kind of corrupt deal with large companies and foreign leaders, leaving office a much richer than he is now. We the People have the power to stop Trump if we take collective action. We need protest marches in every city in the US. We need a national strike. We need a tax revolt. We need to do these actions very soon.

The form letters I get back all state "The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) was established by President Trump through an executive order as part of the Administration's commitment to streamlining federal operations, reducing waste, and improving service delivery for American citizens."

So they're basically saying, "we're all laying low till our constituents are threatening to vote us out of office".

Cool.
