I sure hope that the winning team does not make the visit to the White House.

Because The Contrarian is not (yet) bringing attention to the experiences of Native Americans under the Trump regime, I am sharing links to two related stories. The USA story is about the Fighting Indians women’s basketball team and a fired coach at Haskell Indian Nations University. The CBS story provides the context of DOGE cuts to the Bureau of Indian Education. The CBS story neglects to make it clear that Native American tribes are sovereign nations whose relationship with the federal government is governed by treaties. Educational and other services are provided as part of those agreements.

These athletes are unlikely to see the White House and the boat they are in is a bit different, but they seem to belong to this story.

In terms of the boat the athletes are in, one aspect of it is that the Trump regime is crazily arguing that Native Americans don’t have birthright citizenship. It’s an unsound case. It’s also a racist case.

We are living in a time when the racists are crying racism--the University of Alabama is investigated as racist for recruiting the best talent and providing scholarships.

And antisemites are crying antisemitism to punish schools that are educating young people, including Jewish students, by pulling their funding. And they are going after blue cities too to divide and conquer around complex heartrending politics: https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2025/03/13/federal-task-force-antisemitism-schools-campus-chicago-brandon-johnson-bondi-justice-department

Young athletes are on the line when they depend on government funding for an education and protections for free speech to protest inequities. What will they do? (I hope they demonstrate more awareness and understanding than the young people who participated in a long-term NYT focus group and voted for Trump in the recent elected.)

I will ask my husband to keep me informed because he has kept a subscription to The Athletic (dropped other NYT subscription services).

Thank you for helping me understand all this. I don't follow sports other than to ask my husband for an update now and then.
