My dad worked for a union company. If it wasn’t for his union he wouldn’t have had the best in health insurance, dental insurance and better than average pay. When my mom was diagnosed with cancer she got the best cancer treatment insurance would pay for. I am an indirect beneficiary of a labor union because we all had a better quality of life. Anyone who works for the government should have a union even though my dad worked for a private company doing government contract work. He was a skilled laborer who worked as a mechanic on government aircraft.

I to am a child of a union dad. He was in the Pipe Fitter/ Welder Union in Chicago IL. As a very young child 4 or 5 he explained to me why he had to go walk the picket line. It was so he would be able to take care of his family and to make sure the work that was being done was done to the highest standards for the safety of the US citizens and the world. He worked on many Nuclear Power Plants. When he got cancer from exposure from the work he did the Union had his records of where he had worked so he was able to be a part of a class action that really helped him to be able to stay at his home until he died. That was a gift from his Union membership and his last wish was fulfilled.

I would say that many citizens still don't understand what a union does, especially our young adults. I was teaching a GED class yesterday when a student expressed her understanding of a union rep as a sort of a "spy" paid by the union to infiltrate a business and do very bad things to the other employees, like keep their wages low and take away protections. Boy, was I surprised! She got a little lesson right then and there from me, and I hope that she remembers it. This was a reading and writing class reading about the rise of Amazon as an online giant. Social studies, however, was definitely the subtext. It seems these days that government is the subtext everywhere these days. Thanks for the great video. I wish I had had it at hand in the classroom yesterday.

Why do some union bosses support Trump? Should they be allowed to support any candidate? What power do members of unions have to call to task union leaders who support politicians who they do not trust?
