If politics are a reflection of values, then we've always been separated to some extent. In my lifetime, I've seen deep divisions over the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam war. This is the first time I've seen a politician gin up such division out of whole cloth, starting with the demonization of illegal immigrants, progressing to immigrants in general, followed by transgender people, every minority, the press, and finally anyone who disagrees with Trump.
It used to be that liberals and conservatives shared a lot of values and mostly disagreed on effective policy. Then Republicans took a hard right turn. Not every Republican is a white supremacist or Christian nationalist, but every white supremacist and Christian nationalist is a Republican today. And to be a Republican in good standing, you have to tolerate them, even accede to their wishes, something my values won't allow me to do.
Great line. Not every Republican is a white supremacist or Christian nationalist, but every white supremacist and Christian nationalist is a Republican today.
Over the last ten years, sadly, Trump has dominated not just the news, but he has taken up space in the minds of almost everyone. He has been so divisive and so extreme that he has made everything political. His power to disrupt has came at a time when technology is disrupting everything also. All of this got confused and magnified by social media, so now, everything is intertwined and divided. Who wants to live in the new world of globalism, A.I, equality of everyone, mixing of races, genders, cultures, and families? Are we going to become interdependent or take care of ourselves? Women are more educated, and more suited for many of today's jobs. Men know that, and rather than treat women as equals, they drop out.
ALSO: for the first time in our history, Americans can't even agree on what is real, what happened in our history, and what kind of country we want to be. Marriages are difficult because we have learned that we shouldn't easily believe what we are told, and we don't trust each other.
I watched Love Is Blind this season ( I need mindless TV these days). I cheered these women! We need shows where this generation speaks up. It is life today. I am the grandmother of a twenty--two and nineteen-year-old, and I know how politics is important to both of them. Their thinking is pro-democracy. They have friends who are Gay, pink, purple, of all colors and creeds, religions, and countries. They both voted in this last election. It’s horrid that the women from the show are being harassed for expressing their concerns and expectations for their chosen partners. So much for nonsense TV!
Interesting comments. I am glad women are more pro democracy. Perhaps because we are more naturally nurturers we understand people as individuals and accept them for who they are. We don’t have to sign on to some group think to make ourselves feel accepted. Instead we are brave enough to accept others as they are.
I am an old lady now and so sad to see the hatred, fear and division happening in this country. The lack of knowledge of history and truth is really bad. So we are going to repeat the same mistakes people have made over and over. Democracy was the new world order and was good. Now America is abandoning democracy for autocracy and the billionaires are back to rule…..which is the old world order.
I recall recently reading an article in which a pollster asked parents about their preferred marriage partner for their child(ren). Part of the survey asked parents to rank their disapproval of a spouse who differed from their child in (1) race; (2) religion; and (3) politics.
Amazingly, parents objected more strongly to a difference in politics than they did to differences in either race or religion. So our polarization is far deeper than just "surface rust".
There might be more subtlety to those results than I recall-- perhaps the rank order differed by the gender of their child, or by some characteristics of the parent. If anyone recalls the details, can they chime in?
I have to laugh....I have been divorced for about 20 years; my ex changed radically during our 27 year marriage and became really focused on money. He has been backing Trump and I have evolved into a liberal Democrat. I would NEVER consider marrying again because I like my life the way it is now
Women outpace men academically because we worked our butts off in the ‘60-‘70s to get into college and then into careers. Many saw their parents struggle on one income or their mother being held back by social convention. My college educated mother finally went back to school for a teaching certificate and was able to get us kids through college. My dad worked very hard in construction before his joints gave out.
Now, some of these entitled dillweeds need to start. If you didn’t graduate from high school, get a GED. If you like cars, go to a trade school-I pay my mechanic a lot of money! If you like kids, become a coach or teacher. If you like building stuff, find a construction job. Sports-become a trainer or coach. Quit thinking the world owes you a living, because it doesn’t. Women will like you more if you’re doing something other than whining. You’ll have real confidence, not bravado based on lies and crap that nasty people are trying to sell you. There is no such thing as Get Rich Quick!!👹

Very interesting. Life is complicated. I think men should be forced to give birth to babies. That will make you grow up despite inadequate parents :)
