What irony that on the day we celebrate one of the great Black civil rights leaders we swear in as President, a white racist! Is this what America has become? Let's never let MLK's dream die.
Thank you for your leadership and your moving words! We need to follow in MLK's footsteps and resist bigotry and corruption, i.e. what's being sworn in today.
Without Dr. King and the Civil Rights movement and the work they did with legislators in Johnson’s time, the Asian exclusion laws might have prevailed. Every group that has ever managed to attain greater rights over modern history has MLK to thank for it.
Beautiful. As a white, privileged male, I couldn’t agree more with the idea that representation matters, lived experiences matter, and people like you are the future not only of our party but our nation. As disgusted as I am with what so many white males who look like me have come to represent, I know they will ultimately fail in the way George Wallace and his fellow segregationists failed. That’s because people like you will take the mantle of the legacy Dr. King left us all. There should be many, many more, but please know you do have lots of allies in people who look like me and will stand by your side in taking on the toxic forces of white, male privilege that have led us to this terrible crisis of democracy and decency.
Your story reminds me of the old saying, "Ginger did everything Fred did, except she had to do it in high heels and backwards...and didn't receive the accolades he received." You faced misogyny, racism, and (I expect) agism, and excelled, overcoming the obstacles and setting an example for not only black women, but women every where. Thank you for persevering and showing what can be done! HT to you. And THANK YOU!
Thank you for all your work to make Michigan a place with Dr. King's vision continues to move forward. Lavora Barnes makes us all proud to be Michigan Democrats.
Thank you for your leadership and service in Michigan! I only wish we could emulate your work and success here in Texas! Being a bright red state with a governor who has spent our tax dollars on "border security" without any real legal status and refused to adequately fund our schools until he gets his dream of lining the pockets of his friends with voucher dollars, is devastating! Keep turning Michigan more and more blue so we will have a bastion of strength as a BLUE example!
Every Texas city is blue, usually with the exception of Fort Worth. There are so many rural Texans, though, and gerrymandering of political districts that cause the voices of urban Texans to be shut down by rural ones, that it's an ongoing fight to change the situation there.
Every American journalist should read the opinion piece by Matthew Parris in The Times UK to avoid getting swept up by the frenzied media hype about Donald Trump, which is ignoring reality:

MLK reminds us on his day that there will be others like him to aide America in moving forward to a more perfect America.
Yup, the darkest of ironies.
2053 will be the next time this coincidence occurs!
Exactly.

I definitely needed this today. Thank you for this piece and for the incredible work you do.
I did too. It has helped with the anguish and disappointment that I am feeling.

I’m sure I am among many readers who needed the hope and strength expressed in this article, especially on this day.
Thank you for your leadership, perseverance, and results! I am so impressed with the turn-around at the MI Dems.

Any chance that the blue in Austin could spread?

Thank you, Lavora. Michigan is so proud of all you do for democracy.

Excellent link! Thank you, Bettina!
Thank you for that shot in the arm!
I just spread it all over the WaPo comments section. :-D
Your words inspire me, Dr. King's legacy lives on and grows.
