Looking to Donald Trump for compassion or empathy is like looking for water in the desert.

The article is premised on 'Had Trump momentarily forgotten the human cost of the war in Ukraine?' The man has never given a moment's care to the human cost of war.

I don’t want this Felon to win in Ukraine. If he did they wouldn’t be able to join NATO. And never trust the Felon to stay in NATO, either! Thank you, Mr Kalb, for your analysis and post.

"Had Trump momentarily forgotten the human cost of the war in Ukraine?"

It's not that he's forgotten, but rather that he doesn't care and has never cared about that human cost.

I am about 1/3 of the way through Woodward's treatise on his 20 interviews with Mr. T. It is an eye-opener. Worth the price to read the inner workings of a devious narcissist; one can get a feeling about the man's psychology by the language he uses. Woodward also adds commentary to his text. Get "The Trump Tapes".

I think Ukraine is NOT about Trump. It's a dictator playbook in which losing cannot be thought of. China provides North Korean soldiers and arms. Putin and Xi are the players here. And, meanwhile, millions of Russians and Ukrainians die.

Trump is too stupid to have any kind of knowledge about this war, and cares not one whit about the lives lost and damage done. He is the one who began cutting aid and support for Ukraine to further cozy up to the enemy.

"Had Trump momentarily forgotten the human cost of the war in Ukraine?"

No, and I do not think he even has given it a thought.

Great article.

Exposing my foreign policy ignorance, I was surprised that Professor Kalb is predicting that Putin will be in danger if he doesn't seem to have won the war - not only losing the Presidency but perhaps his life. To me, Putin had seemed untouchable - the "elected" dictator who will never go away. So major upset in Russia is a possible consequence of the Ukraine war?

There's no question that Trump has been pulling for Russia and Putin for years. Why pretend otherwise? He doesn't know what a winning hand looks like because he's not trying to win for Ukraine or the west.

Because of Trump's incompetence and pro-Russian attitudes, European nations are stepping up support for Ukraine. And because of Trump's economic incompetence and myriad mind-boggling bad policies, that's going to continue long-term as the U.S. falls farther and farther behind the rest of the developed world.

Everyone probably knows this already about Bob Woodward, but I am about 1/3 of the way through "The Trump Tapes" by Bob Woodward: 20 I/Vs with the President (who is also the subject by Woodward in "Rage").

One can get a look into the man's mind by reading his answers to the Qs asked. It is enlightening and scary at the same time. And thank you, Mr. Kalb, for your enlightening essay.
