We should learn from Mamdani and embrace him, not attack him.

I think folks are catching on to the fact that the the traditional Republican Party no longer exists. It has become a party of grievance dominated by white, rural, "religious," nationalists that was taken over from Lincoln's party when it made the mistake of adopting it's southern strategy.

The Republican Southern Strategy began to take shape in the 1960s. It's often associated with Barry Goldwater's 1964 presidential campaign, where he opposed the Civil Rights Act and won five Southern states, breaking the Democratic lock on the South. Richard Nixon adopted and further developed this strategy in his 1968 and 1972 campaigns.

The Southern Strategy aimed to increase support for the Republican Party among white voters in the South by appealing to racial tensions and conservative values. This included subtly endorsing racial segregation and opposing advancements in civil rights. This approach was a response to the Civil Rights Movement, which led many white Southerners to feel alienated from the Democratic Party due to its support for desegregation and voting rights.

In short this was a rebirth of the Jim Crow movement.

The Jim Crow movement refers to the historical period in the United States, primarily in the South, characterized by legal and social systems of racial segregation and discrimination against African Americans. These laws and practices, lasting from the late 19th century into the mid-20th century, enforced the separation of facilities, services, and opportunities based on race.

Key aspects of the Jim Crow movement:

Racial Segregation:

.

Jim Crow laws mandated the separation of facilities and services for Black and white people, including schools, transportation, restaurants, and restrooms.

Disenfranchisement:

.

African Americans were systematically denied the right to vote through various means, such as literacy tests, poll taxes, and grandfather clauses.

System of Oppression:

.

Jim Crow was more than just a set of laws; it was a system that enforced racial hierarchy and inequality through social customs, violence, and intimidation. This is now being expanded to include any non-whites beginning with the immigrant population because the MAGA bunch has embraced the fear that they are becoming a numerical minority as immigration and higher birth rates among minorities are about to make whites a demographic minority in the US.

Plessy v. Ferguson:

.

The Supreme Court's 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson upheld the legality of segregation under the "separate but equal" doctrine, providing legal justification for Jim Crow laws.

End of Jim Crow:

.

The Civil Rights Movement, with its protests, boycotts, and legal challenges, eventually led to the dismantling of Jim Crow laws through landmark legislation like the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Origins of the Name:

.

The term "Jim Crow" originated from a racist minstrel show character popularized in the mid-1800s.

The Jim Crow movement was a dark chapter in American history, highlighting the pervasive nature of racism and the struggle for racial equality. It serves as a reminder of the importance of ongoing efforts to combat discrimination and promote social justice.
