We already saw what happened back in the 90’s when the government monkeyed with the National Weather Service offices when they closed half of them. The NEXRAD radar technology had the limitation of not being able to detect certain weather conditions at certain locations. As a result, many heavily populated areas were not adequately warned by an early warning system. Many of these offices had to be reopened and reassigned to other locations because of the Next Generation Radar system having a limitation of not being able to detect certain weather conditions at precise locations due the curvature of the earth.

To dismantle NOAA would be absolutely foolish. The ability to be able to predict weather and climate conditions more accurately helps us to be able to develop food crops in a way where the nutritional yield is improved and available when we have need for them. We really need to rail against the government about this.

All of the funding for FEMA and NOAA is going to South African immigrants!

As a mariner, I can't imagine a world without NOAA. But you know what? I bet there's a Musk company that is all set to provide the world maritime industry with just the info it needs.

Just what kind of info?? Dis-info is more likely

I think we are playing whack-a-mole people. You are losing sight of the big picture. He is chopping up the car and selling the parts. It's all about privatization. This is not a philosophy battle. Follow the money and only the money. He is laying the groundwork to sell off public goods for private gain. It's always like that with the bastards ...Privatize the gains socialize the losses

When Mar a Largo is in the direct path of a devastating hurricane and/or tornado and gets wiped out would they decide to call NOAA and FEMA employees back? Or why hasn’t that happened already if as MTG said Dems control the weather. Too bad they can’t.

I keep having to use the word “sociopathic” to describe the actions of the Musk-Trump regime and their Project 2025 playbook. None of this is about usefulness or not. They’re smashing and destroying anything they can because they can. It’s a display of dominance, ment to cow decent people into submission. King George III tried that too.

NOAA owns satellites that observe the Earth and collect data. It owns ships that collect data and perform scientific studies on oceanography, habitat, fisheries resources, marine wildlife and more. NOAA’s value to the public goes well beyond collecting and analyzing data for weather and climate forecasts. Businesses and scientists have access to NOAA’s data and the analyses (products) NOAA creates for the public good using it. Project 2025’s goal is to privatize NOAA’s satellites, ships and other platforms and its data collection services. Imagine Elon Musk/Trump taking control of the satellites for his own purposes, or selling them to oil companies/billionaires who will now be in control of climate data. Research ships would get sold and no longer used for public’s benefit. Data on whales hit by ships or entangled in fishing gear? It won’t be collected, or if it is, it won’t be publicly available. Kiss endangered marine species good-bye. Much of the country will be duped, because whoever owns the satellites, and ships, and data can just create fake “non-profit” organizations (as oil/gas billionaires have already done to undermine offshore wind development), write a lovely mission statement, and feed us corrupted data and analyses—or rather, charge us for it. That’s Trump/Musk’s end goal.

There are hearings this week in Congress on the Endangered Species Act and Marine Mammal Protection Act. Those laws and the species that depend on them as their safety net won’t survive this Trump/Musk/Project 2025 disgrace.

Please follow up your article on NOAA Weather/climate data with an article on what the public, fishermen, boaters, beach-goers, wildlife lovers, etc will lose if NOAA is dissolved or dismantled and strewn across other parts of the govt in an effort to make it ineffective.
