Marvin,

Antisemitism is the oldest hatred in the world, and has indeed been a serious problem at Harvard and other elite universities, as you accurately pointed out here. Islamophobia has also been a serious problem at these institutions.

But Trump’s commitment to combatting antisemitism is pure, unadulterated bullshit. In fact, his fascist regime has done nothing but enable antisemitism and empower antisemites like, ‘space Nazi freak,’ Elon Musk.

And its attempt to deport non-citizen university students who express support for Palestinian self-determination and coercing of universities like Columbia and Harvard to submit to its intellectually dishonest definition of antisemitism by threatening to terminate medical research funding for these universities, if they refuse to comply, may actually be engendering more antisemitism at these universities. Maybe that’s part of why the Trump regime is doing it.

Trump, along with disgusting, revolting New York Congresswoman Elise Stefanik, would be the first person if he lived in Nazi occupied Europe during the late 1930s and early 1940s to rat out Jews to the Gestapo. And no one should allow himself or herself to be hoodwinked into believing otherwise.

Please tell me what you think when you have the opportunity. Happy Fourth!

David Hurwitz

There is no negotiating with the regime. You just fight it.

Where are the Harvard alumni, among the best, brightest and most powerful in this country? They need to take a stand for the academic independence they benefitted from. Better yet, tell Trump to pound sand. Their endowment is big enough to run the university without federal help. BTW, does anyone else think this could be tied to the fact that Trump and his family went to Penn…trying to make his university greater?

When will media new and legacy linked the assault on the university by exposing money 100 million campaign given to Trump by Adelsteins widow . Allegedly, She negotiated with trump to go after universities that allowed students to protest for Palestinian rights and against Israel. This set the tone. Dei is a code word for racism, sexism and homophobia. Why don’t the media call it for what it is.

In answer to the question of where Harvard's alumni/ae are -- many of us are right here. And we're writing checks -- because the fact is that most of Harvard's admittedly huge endowment consists of restricted funds that cannot be redeployed to the fundamental task of keeping the doors open. It seems -- to me, at least -- that, since Harvard's battle with this administration is actually being fought on behalf of all institutions of higher education, maybe our alumni/ae support should be supplemented by contributions from everyone who values knowledge instead of ignorance.

Trump wants to be like Victor Orban and control everything everywhere at the same time. He’s full of grievances and resentment towards academic freedom.

There is no compromise with Trump. It has to be a full on battle. It is victory or death. As as aside, despite the ideological indoctrination, there are a lot of high level Trump administration officials, Republican elected figures, that have Harvard degrees. So much so, I wonder if Harvard turns out any liberals.

Highly educated Americans are less likely to vote for MAGA Republican candidates. Trump is attacking sources of opposition voters.

I did not go to Harvard. My application was rejected, as it should have been at that point in my development. Despite that, I have always held Harvard in the highest esteem, cherishing its long history of educating the best and brightest. Moreover, I have held great respect for Harvard as a research institution that has been a blessing to our nation and to me. It was a Colombian researcher at Harvard who developed the brain surgery that gave me my life back.

My hope is that Harvard will stick to its guns, so to speak, even at the cost of government grants. If the university should need the pittance I can contribute because its integrity and values are preserved, I will gladly do it.

Stand firm, immovable, for your fight is not in vain.

Or, we can just call it what it is: A fascist desire to eliminate critical thinking (or any thinking that doesn't help them advance their plot to take over America), starting with the most revered college/university in the country. Others will follow in short order. In red states (I live in IN), universities have been eliminating programs for the last eight years. Republian governors (or former governors who become President of Purdue till 2023) decided to do away with majors like literature and secondary education, claiming they want to focus on STEM, but it's all a set-up for intellectual failure.

I am an alum of Harvard, a retiree of Harvard and a resident of Cambridge. I agree with the position expressed by Professor Hurwitz. I am not sure what Trump's actual motivations are for wanting to destroy Harvard, but it is clear to me that is what he wants, and he hates to fail.

Harvard is Obama's alma mater - ever since President Obama roasted Trump at the press core dinner event Trump has been bent on revenge. Does anyone else think this is connected???
