THIS. ^^^ IMHO, to have not raised this issue is Senatorial malpractice. Not that anything in these hearings is going to be more than performative lipstick on the porcine...

I am borrowing from myself here. Originally scribbled in response to a similar ditty commenting on the tech bros' bribery contributions -- excuse me, offers of "gratuity" -- to the inaugural fund, the Third "Lady"'s egopic, etc.. etc., which commentary was deleted by lackeys at The Bezos Trumpet, ne Washington Post. With acknowledgement to the original poster there, and to Frank Loesser, herewith a quick refrain to "The Oldest Established" from Guys and Dolls (link to original below):

♬♪ Oh, it’s good old deplorable Donny: Donald Grifter Mob Boss J. Trump.

At each broligarch’s bundle he’s eager to jump, and ev’ry MAGA voter is a gullible chump.

Barbie Pam sees no problem with brib’ry – SCOTUS calls it “gratuity” –

It’s the oldest established pay-to-play suck-up cr@p game in D.C. ♬♪

Trump made an illegal $25,000 contribution to her campaign, illegal because the check came from his charitable foundation, which as a non-profit tax exempt body is forbidden by law from contributing to political campaigns.

is there any hope that these abominable nominees will not be confirmed? I heard from, I believe it was Heather Cox Richardson's substack that reports are that "Republican senators are coming around to these nominees." The fault for this mess lies squarely at the feet of Mitch McConnell who feared the "loss of enthusiasm of the base" if the senate convicted Trump of the crimes that had him impeached the second time by the House. "Loss of enthusiasm by the base" is a euphemism for loss of votes, which translates to pure and simple: Loss of power. In his insatiable quest for power McConnell has brought our great and beloved nation to the brink of destruction.

I agree Stanley. Anyone who thinks rallying behind this class of Democrats is a winning strategy is hopelessly blind to reality. Everyone correctly rails against the corrupt and immoral Republican Party, but seemingly cannot accept the failure of the Democratic Party to find a strategic way to defeat them. Whatever people think of the Democrats, the fact remains, and excuses aside, they failed to beat an eminently beatable opponent.

The Democrats' performance in the Bondi hearing was perfunctory, as it usually is. With thoughts of how to combat Republicans in the future, they needed to connect the dots on how we got to this place to begin with. In this hearing, anything related to the Department of Justice is fair game. Why no mention of special counsel Smith's findings? They should have reviewed Trump's first term and his tawdry demands on the Justice Department. They should have questioned Bondi on the impropriety and malfeasance of Eileen Cannon in dismissing charges brought by the Justice Department against a former president who stole and refused to return top secret documents. In short, Democrats should use these hearings to publicly convict Trump, and forewarn that he fully intends to cover up his numerous wrongdoings and punish people who have supported the rule of law and the Constitution. Moreover, they should have forced Bondi to defy facts and evidence in her unwavering support and loyalty to Trump, not the Constitution. Finally, they should have crafted their attack on Bondi to ensure Republicans supporting her will endure maximum pain in the future. We need Democrats who understand that this is a fight for the future of the country.

Chips did you get to read the book "Evil Geniuses" by the journalist Kurt Anderson? I say constantly - it's a fantastic read but it's so depressing it's difficult for me to recommend to my friends. I've read a LOT of books on how we arrived to where we are today in American politics. Anderson's "Evil Geniuses" is a well researched & crafted synopsis of this journey. Your post indicates you'd enjoy it, but do NOT come back and say I "recommended" it if you find yourself depressed! We need happy warriors!

that's a good point. John Mitchell, if I recall correctly had been an attorney in private practice and never worked in judicial branch in any capacity. And Nixon did it for the exact same motive as that held by Trump, he wanted loyalty over the Constitution. Do we know anything about Bondi's husband? Where is Martha when we need her!!

Some here may not know that:

1) Martha was John Mitchell’s wife who was outspoken to the extreme and

It would not be shocking to see Pam Bondi end up in prison at some point. With a boss like Trump it seems almost inevitable.

The most frightening element of Mitchell's story, that I remember well, but have not been able to find video or reporting of when I've looked these past few years: when he got out of jail, someone asked him if he'd repented for his sins. The response, in essence: Shove it up your arse; this country is going to go so far right over the next few decades that you won't recognize it.

This was in the early to mid 70s, when all the institutions that have built up the new fascism were established. They had a plan, and they've executed it well.
