The Democratic Minority Leaders" of Congress should be taking the direction of this post. They could have started by pointing to Trump during last night's speech and yelling "Felon", each being escorted out one-by-one.
The white Democrats, all of the Democrats who were there, in fact, should have gotten up and walked out when Al Green was pulled out of the chamber. It was a terrible look for them all to just sit there and let him be taken out for being brave enough to call out the unPresident for his lies.
Bishop Jackson is correct. The African American churches led the civil rights movement. Too many Black faith leaders have forgotten our history and have aligned their churches with politicians who are working to eliminate civil rights for people of color and women. The SAVE Act congressional bill will require a birth certificate or passport to register to vote. If they don't have a passport, this will disenfranchise over 60 million women who dropped their maiden names and adopted their spouse's name. And of course requiring birth certificates was a common tool used during Jim Crow to prevent minority and older people from voting because of institutional barriers to getting their birth certificates.
People have been killed throughout American history simply for exercising their right to vote. Those who don't vote need to realize that it must be important if others would rather kill you than allow you to vote. As Bishop Jackson states, faith leaders must educate their congregations not to vote for politicians who spread lies about people of color and women. The GOP and Trump have gone from declaring that Kamala Harris (lawyer, District Attorney, Attorney General, Senator, Vice President) was UNQUALIFIED to be President to removing all visible Black and women leaders from public federal positions and ending all references to anyone not white or male in federal publications. We need our churches to lead us out of this wilderness.
Bishop Barber is one of the outstanding heroes of our times. I have been a monthly donor of the Poor People's Campaign for nearly a decade and have participated in a number of their events. I encourage everyone to support Repairers of the Breach.
Why should black people always be the one to stand up? How about white people? It’s white supremacy that’s underlying so much of this. White people need to take it on.
I am white and I completely agree with you. Not enough white people in this country have the willingness and courage to face our racial oppression of Native Americans and our use of slavery to fatten our wallets. I think white people need to take to the streets like black people have historically. White male conservatives and the utocrats work very hard to keep white people and people of color from joining forces and sharing common interests and concerns around fairness and justice. I deeply appreciate your comment and the Bishop's column. Thank you.
Yes, and white faith leaders need to join with Black faith leaders and get their congregations on board with the resistance. There are white churches that are MAGA oriented, but there are far more that are not.
First of all, black leaders need to convince black males not to fall for the orange felon's lies and vote for him and his co-criminals. What a shame that black men don't seem to be anywhere near as smart as black women. I guess black women have a lot more bitter experience in having to see through all the bullshit.
As the Bishop says, we must educate with facts. 71% of Black men voted for Harris, 24% for Trump. Your language is unfair and impatient, and it does not seem that you read what the Bishop has to say. The accomplishments of Black leadership--both men and women--in advancing civil rights in this country is impressive. They've done it before and they can do it again. I'll follow them.
Very well written and straight to to the point. While perhaps cruel, make no mistake, what t-Rump and his cronies are doing is deliberate, they need a source of uneducated, cheap labor. Regrettably, our black brothers and sisters are t-Rumps target.
Great, great article, and yes, you are talking directly to me, right where I live.
As a white man, I am quite literally married to this. I won't get into a lot of personal details; I'll save that for my personal blog, or site, and anyway, my wife's story is hers to tell, not mine. But I am completely all-in, faith and all. (Which I do share when appropriate.) My workplace fully supports DEI, and is exempt from any interference from this illegitimate president* or his enablers. I have no hesitancy in saying that, with confidence. And though not in management, will do my part to *keep it* that way.

Voting as we all know is a civil right. To try and prevent one from voting is also like obstructing justice.

I felt like the headline was a bit of click bait and I reacted to it.
