A truly dreadful predicament for a people who helped so much and suffered so much. And this suffering is never ending, especially for the women. The United States government as a whole has failed in this endeavor and shame is too mild for all of them.
I am devastated about this attack on people who risked their lives to help the US and will likely be sent back to certain death. No one will ever trust the US's promises again. Please Democrats in Congress, speak up and call out this hypocrisy. Name names. Embarrass those who have given up their principles to Trump's horror show
As someone who has represented several Afghans in asylum/SIV proceedings, this is just heartbreaking. These are good people who will be extremely productive citizens in the US. Many of them are Hazara, an ethnic/religious minority that will never be accepted by the Taliban. Sending these people back to Afghanistan is, for many of them, a death sentence, and, for all of them,
This move by Trump -- to betray, abandon and expel people who risked their lives to help us is morally evil...and strategically stupid. Classic Trump. But who will ever again commit to us in ANY war -- after seeing our President make this wretched choice? He doesn't care. Do We?
I live in Washington DC so don’t have a voting member of Congress, but everyone who does should be calling, mailing, doing everything they can to reverse these heinous moves by the Trump administration.
Especially if they are Republicans. These Rs loudly and proudly control both houses of Congress and the White House. They can address this issue IF they want to. Hold their feet to fire. Make them answer why they aren't doing more for these Afghans.
Never did I imagine that I would see selected American leadership in the same cohort as Hitler, Stalin, et.al. This redefines cruelty. I am embarrassed for our country. —John A NIEMITZ, Peace Corps, Afghanistan 1968-1970
This is pure hypocrisy! Also, why do the Democrats fail to point out that the Taliban suicide bomber who killed 13 US Service Members and 150+ Afghanis at Abbey Gate was freed from prison by Trump's Peace Treaty.
Trump abandoned the Kurd's who fought for us against ISIS. Trump hired undocumented immigrants after 9/11 to clear his property in lower Manhattan. Trump set the stage for the Taliban take over in Afghanistan. Why has he abandoned our allies and neighbors Canada and Mexico. Why do you think he would not abandon his Afghan allies if it seemed convenient to him. If one doesn't have empathy, shame or intellect there are no limits on behavior.
Horror and disgust. I used to love my country while still recognizing her flaws. Now, I'm ashamed of her. No, I'm not ashamed of "her." I am ashamed of all the monsters, with an "R" following their names, who are violating her. Disgusting.
I believe Trump will be remembered as The Biggest AssHole ever to be elected US President. And probably also as the last person to be elected President in a Free and Fair election.
I think a lot of it is that with Trump, a lot of people simply will not believe he will do the very things he says he will do. Surely nobody could be so evil to send back tens of thousands of Afghans who helped our military, right? Well, believe it.
Yes, write your Congressman - even the Democrats - to raise a stink about this.
The US always abandons it allies. George Bush the first abandoned the Shia that supported us while we were fighting in Kuwait once the war was over. trump abandoned the Kurds, Biden abandoned many Afghans because he mistakenly thought that by pulling them out too soon the government would collapse. Well, the government fled. So trump sending Afghans back to be killed & tortured is kind of in his wheelhouse isn't it? He's just itching for bloodshed. This way he literally kills 2 birds with one stone, deport Afghans that are probably Muslim anyway (remember the Muslim ban) & then let the Taliban take care of them. Easy Peasy oh so trumpy queezy!
As a member of my local Ethical Humanist Society, I have worked with an Afghan refugee family for the past 3-1/2 years. The man was assigned to help inform US troops with information about Taliban activities.
At the end of the war, the Lutheran Resettlement Service, Catholic Charities, our local Unitarian-Universalist Congregation, and our Ethical Society stepped in to help sponsor their resettlement in the United States. I drove them to Washington, DC, three years ago for their first green card and immigration hearing, and spent uncounted hours tutoring the father in ESL.
They have four teenage sons and a 2-1/2-year-old daughter (born in the U.S., who of course has American citizenship). The eldest son just graduated from high school. The others just finished 10th, 8th, and 7th grades and have become virtually fluent in English.
The father has worked steadily in a warehouse for over 3 years, and the mother, even with her small child, works part-time at Walmart and has started a catering and cooking business to help support the family. They are models of what new immigrant American families, who earn citizenship through loyalty, hard work, and an irrepressable drive to live out American values, go through to become citizens of this nation.
They remind me in fact of my Russian grandparents, who arrived in the United States in 1911 after fleeing the Czar's crackdown on the short-lived democracy movement there. The possibility that this wonderful family should be deported back to a country where the father immediately would be killed, the two oldest sons would either be forcibly drafted into the Taliban or themselves put in camps or prisons or killed, is appalling and yet it is exactly what I expect from this administration.
(And it's the quisling regimiste Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban immigrants who left Cuba for the American "good life" (not, as he still lies, to escape "Castro's communism") even before Fidel Castro took over, who is perhaps the least principled person in public life in the entire United States. In fact, I'm surprised that he still has a law degree. It should have been rescinded by the university where he got it since he clearly has no knowledge of, or interest in, the U.S. Constitution, its principles and specific laws, or, most importantly, legal ethics.)

GOP hypocrisy doesn’t surprise me at all. After all they are Gaslighting Our People.

It has become obvious that the main objectives of the fascist party are cruelty and inhumanity.
"Christian" values, my ass.
Saying it loud and clear at every opportunity is important “Christian , my ass…..let alone “values”

YES…. Feet to the fire…..on a lot of issues

Who negotiated the US withdrawal from Afghanistan?
