The sheer chaos is enough to sow deep distrust of the US for years to come. And logically, this can't just be blamed on Trump. A majority in Congress supports him and he won a popular majority in the election although quite narrowly (a 1% shift in key states would have delivered a Harris victory). Yes, we elected Obama twice and we elected Biden in 2020. But Trumpism looms large and it will be difficult for people around the world to believe it is not a major force in the US. It will take a long time to purge this attitude, or at least enough of it to have a strong effect.
I worry that the only thing that can begin to restore our reputation is the impeachment of El Presidente. But as long as there are enough of his cultists in Congress, it's not going to happen.
Impeach and convict, then remove both p47 and vp Hillbilly. Speaker Johnson has more sense than the two mentioned above. I’m not a Republican, but this is a reality as I see it.
That won't do anyhow. Hanging this on an individual and few other political gangsters would be laughed off the global stage. Good old Joe Biden's "trust us" after T1 will not work again.
It occurred to me today that to rebuild trust, should we have the opportunity, we would have to pass laws, that would curb the power of the president and vice president and would guard the power of Congress. I wouldn’t be able to trust us after seeing the incredible stupidity of Trump having been elected again, and the inability of a part of Congress, and the unwillingness of another part of Congress, to curb his worst instincts. I would think that if it happened once it could happen again, unless there were to be some major structural change. The significant commitments of our government to programs, institutions, nations and allegiances that had lasted for decades were flushed down the toilet in a couple of months. And so in someway, we have to reform in a way that protects those commitments. We cannot survive in isolation, but must be part of the global community again. I get tired just thinking about it.
Trump's notion that other countries have been ripping us off is total nonsense. The truth is we've all grown wealthier together. He doesn't understand that impoverishing our neighbors is not in our interests. He believes that for us to win, everyone else has to lose. His trade policy is pretty much like his business policy; if the con doesn't work, threaten and litigate till your enemies comply.
At what point, does SOMEONE determine that Trump is not only a liar, bigot and prone to authoritarianism, but totally INCOMPETENT!!
At what point, do the American people say DJT is DANGEROUS to our country and to the world?? Congress has become a pack of lapdogs, and the cabinet is licking his feet. Roberts isn't much better.
"Cannot be fully trusted" is sugar-coating the truth, which is that the rest of the world now knows not only not to trust America, but to trust that America will not hesitate to threaten, bully and extort to suit it's interests, or even just to enjoy the spectacle of its chosen victim squirm, suffer and beg. Yes, there are still many many Americans unlike Trump. But when so many in power have turned to support him, and nearly half of Americans still support him, when the rest of the world meet an American, how will we any longer give the benefit of the doubt to that American, that he maybe is not a Trump-type? More laws will not fix this. This needs a cultural reset to America's sense of morality and what is public good, and where the individual place is in society where he can do as much good as he benefits from that society. When this is over (and IF that happens), the Christian community needs to do a deep dive into its fundamentals and do a major reset.
Yes! as a Canadian, I am pissed about “Loony-Tunes Trump”, who negotiated the latest USMCA trade agreement and had illegally broken it!
But for most Canadians, the threat of “Annexation”, which is NOT recognized in international law, has made polite (but in no way pushover!) Canadians really pissed off… This is not the way a good neighbour, allie, and friend expects to be treated.
Canada 🇨🇦, under the leadership of our
Prime Minister Mark Carny, has already led the world in resisting the Trump MAGA Republican Madness. Make no mistake, we will fight, along with our NATO partners, AND the many others from countries around the world, who like and admire our country and its people. As my Hippie ‘1960-1970s’ generation would say and I still do:
“FUCK OFF !”
“ELBOWS UP” we Canadians and our supporters would say to an American 🇺🇸 military invasion.
Joanna Marie Rolland
Proud Canadian woman 🇨🇦 75, born in 1949, the year NATO was founded as a bulwark against dictatorship- which Loony Tunes & his MAGA-Mad Republican Party wants to destroy!
DJT is but one man and part of the executive branch. This loss of trust and standing in the world falls equally on Congress and its failure to honor oaths of office ... Congress allows lawless and unconstitutional behaviors to run amok.
'As we have written, American foreign policy since 1945, despite its shortcomings, facilitated American power and prosperity and provided benefits to much of the rest of the world.' in 1953 democratically elected government of Iran was overthrown in the military coup orchestrated by the US - the bloody regime of the shah was installed, and Iran never recovered.
In the '60s any attempt for democracy in the Latin America would meet a similar fate, culminating with Chilean 9/11 that would lead to some 3000 desaparecidos, and more than 40000 people tortured. Not to speak of Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos with hundred of thousands if not millions killed. The list is endless.
Modern times: in 2003 the US started almost total destruction of Iraq based on deliberate lies of weapons of mass destruction, with countless victims. Even under Obama Yemen was regularly bombarded, an act of international terrorism - the US never proclaimed war on Yemen. For decades the US has been directly supporting the apartheid of Gaza culminating with 18 months of genocide of biblical proportions.
Please stop revising history, and not only for the sake of truth. The imperialistic policies have been destroying America, bringing it to the brink of dictatorship, to Trump, Musk and their cronies. In 2003 the US was a dominant world economy, the sevenfold of Chinese one - by 2011 when it left Iraq they become comparable. Trillions spent on destruction, instead of being spent on education, healthcare, infrastructure, science, you name it. If this refusal to face reality - which is at the core of democracy - the US could be easily dragged into the war with Iran. Meanwhile, people are being disappeared for the right to free speech as in true dictatorships. If we care about democracy here, we have a moral and social duty to speak the truth and to care for others, above all for the countless innocent Palestinians victims, mostly children and women. Instead, one spreads the propaganda (more appropriate for countries like Russia and China) of 80 years of doing good to the world.

In other words: we have to vote the Trumplican Party OUT!

As has always been the case: Everything Trump touches, turns to sh*t. So sad….but So true!
